Passions actor Bernard Fox dead at 89

Former Passions, General Hospital, and Bewitched actor Bernard Fox (ex-Dr. Bombay; ex-Nigel Penny-Smith) has died.

Television icon Bernard Fox, known to soap opera audiences as Passions' Dr. Bombay and General Hospital's Nigel Penny-Smith, passed away on December 14 due to heart failure, says spokesman Harlan Boll. The U.K. native was 89.

Fox began his career in the entertainment world as a child actor on the stage. His parent's divorce prompted him to run away before the age of 18 and join the Royal Navy during World War II. After the war ended, he decided to try his hand at professional acting and ended up in over 30 films and starring on several notable television series.

One of his most recent acting roles was that of Dr. Bombay on NBC's quirky soap Passions, which he played from 1999 to 2000. The character was based on another of his famous roles -- that of flamboyant family physician Dr. Bombay on the beloved sitcom Bewitched.

But it wasn't just Bewitched that made Fox famous. He played major roles in a slew of classic television shows like Sixpenny Corner, Three Live Wires, Make Room For Daddy, The Dick Van Dyke Show, The Andy Griffith Show, The Farmers Daughter, 12 O'Clock High, The Man From U.N.C.L.E, Hogan's Heroes, and Love, American Style. He also briefly appeared on GH as English engineer Nigel Penny-Smith in 1981.

He is survived by his wife, Jacqueline; a daughter, Amanda; and two grandchildren.
