The Shrek movie series is one of the most popular animated franchises. It was made by Ted Elliott, Terry Rossio, Joe Stillman, and Roger S. H. Schulman. The movie series is loosely based on the 1990s' children's book ‘Shrek!’ written by William Steig. The franchise started with the 1st film, Shrek, which was released in 2001. The film was loved by both kids and adults because of its humor, unique characters, and fairy tale story with a twist. The cast of the franchise includes Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz and John Lithgow. The franchise became the 18th highest-grossing film franchise of all time.
Unlike traditional fairy tales, Shrek made fun of classic stories while still telling a heartwarming tale about friendship, love, and self-acceptance. Because of the huge success of the 1st movie, more Shrek films were made over the years. Each film continues the story of Shrek, the grumpy but kind-hearted ogre, his wife Princess Fiona, and his sidekick Donkey. So far, there have been 4 main Shrek movies, along with two spin-offs and upcoming films. Let’s take a look at how many Shrek movies are there.
