TV personality Brittany Cartwright revealed her son Cruz’s autism diagnosis in an exclusive interview with People magazine on April 9, 2025. Cruz, born to Cartwright and Jax Taylor, is three years old.
He not only has autism symptoms but is also mostly nonverbal. She said this phase had been difficult given her ongoing divorce with Jax Taylor. Reflecting on the initial days, Brittany Cartwright said:
“A lot of people have tried to diagnose my son from social media or sitting on their armchairs and you know saying, "Why is he not talking yet? Why is he not talking yet?" Or coming up with their own reasons why my son isn't talking and I felt like it was up to me whenever I was ready to talk about his autism.”
Brittany Cartwright shared that she was learning more about her son’s autism diagnosis. She explained that this was a new journey for their family, and as his mother, she saw herself as his voice and strongest advocate, committed to supporting and standing up for him every step of the way. Concerning the diagnosis, she said:
“We finally were able to get with his doctor and they did diagnose him with autism and so right now, he's non-verbal autism but that doesn't mean he's always going to be non-verbal. He does say "Mommy." He will sporadically say different words like we were driving in the car one day we were in Kentucky with my sister and all of a sudden he goes, "Mommy I want to get out." Like plain as day.”
Brittany Cartwright called Cruz her partner in crime
Brittany Cartwright shared that Cruz initially hit his developmental milestones early; he crawled, walked, and spoke sooner than expected. He used to say several words, but around age two, his speech began to decline even though his physical development remained on track. She enrolled him in speech therapy at that point.
Since then, Cruz improved, especially in eye contact and social behavior. Brittany described him as a sweet and strong child who rarely has meltdowns, loves swimming, and finds comfort in water, which helps with his sensory needs. She said:
“He is my better half. He is my little partner in crime. He is everything to me and even though he can't talk, I know everything that he wants, everything that he needs and it's just like we're just like so synced. It's incredible.”
Brittany Cartwright shared that she hired an occupational therapist to support her son at school, focusing on his social and communication skills. She expressed how thankful she felt to be in a position where she could provide him with the help he needed.
Recognizing that not all parents have the same access to resources, she said she hoped to support other moms who might be facing similar challenges but had fewer options.
Brittany Cartwright shared that her labor with Cruz lasted around 37 hours and was so long that doctors considered a C-section. She was determined to deliver naturally, and when he finally arrived, it was an emotional moment with her mom and Jax Taylor by her side.
She remembered how beautiful he looked, with a full head of black hair and dark eyes. When she held him for the first time, she thought he looked like his father.
