While there might be people who enjoyed the film, there are certain glaring loopholes in its storyline that might make you scratch your head. So let us take a look into five plot holes viewers spotted in the film.
The following article contains major spoilers for the film. So viewer's discretion is advised.
5 Holland plot loopholes explored
1) No mention of what makes Holland special
Holland takes place in the titular Michigan town. Throughout the film, Nancy Vandergroot, the protagonist, keeps talking about the town and the story of how she was saved by Fred. So there is a general feeling that there is something special about that place and it will be revealed in the end by someone. But that never happens and the viewers are left with no answers. And while Nancy calls it peaceful, the town is anything but that.
2) Fred and Dave's altercation
Nancy tells Dave that she will leave her husband Fred for him. Dave offers to get proof of Fred's infidelity so she won't feel as bad about leaving him. The two of them follow Fred to get proof. Later, after Nancy leaves, Fred k*lls a woman and Dave records the entire act. Fred sees him recording and the two then get into a physical fight and Fred ends up getting stabbed and falls into a lake. However, we see Fred fine and somehow he has managed to survive the wound. It's never explained.
3) Lack of Nancy's backstory

As mentioned above, Nancy keeps mentioning how it was Fred who helped her come to the town. But this subplot is barely touched and the viewers are not given any explanation of what happened that led to Fred rescuing her. We don't know much about their lives prior to them coming to town. The viewers are kept in the dark about the protagonist's backstory. Similarly, we don't know anything about Dave's profession before he arrived in Holland either.
4) Dave's magical survival
After his scuffle with Fred, Dave manages to come out of the fight alive and well, but continues to have visions about him. Later on, at a motel, Nancy accidentally drops a television set on his head. The makers don't reveal what exactly happened to him and how he survived. But it hinted that he might have left the town.
5) The misdeeds of Fred remain undisclosed
Dave and Nancy want to be together and he tells her that Fred will not be coming back. But the question keeps lingering if all the crimes committed by Fred will ever come out in the open. His death is near certain but the film doesn't answer other questions around the character.
