Julia confronted "Di Kirby" for info on the Dragon. Tad then broke the news to Julia that Di is Dixie. Julia was floored. And outraged, as she felt Tad had betrayed her. Julia questioned "Dixie," who confirmed that she'd dated Kevin but insisted she knew nothing about the Dragon. Julia wasn't buying it. After she left, Di ripped into Tad for not telling her about Julia; he responded that she's become difficult to trust. The two acknowledged that they're falling in love all over again, but she still wouldn't cop to knowing more about the Dragon than she's let on. "Dixie" took offense when Tad asked her to keep quiet about Julia's presence at the Martin house and stormed off. When Tad went upstairs, Julia was missing.
There was an awkward moment at the hospital when JR and Babe walked in on Jamie tending to Little Adam. Jamie berated JR for being so neglectful of his baby; Babe defended her ex-hubby. Jamie left after one last harsh comment to Babe. JR asked why she didn't go after him; she then issued another heartfelt apology to him for having made him believe their son had been killed in that helicopter crash. Babe dozed off, then was woken up by a nightmare. JR told Babe she could spend time with their son tonight; she was grateful.... Jamie denied to Joe that the Babe situation is getting to him.... Jamie watched through the window as JR and Babe gazed lovingly at their son.
Jonathan's doc informed Ryan and Erin that Jonathan doesn't suffer from a psychiatric disorder; he actually has a brain tumor that has been causing his psychotic behavior. "It's not his fault!" gasped Ryan. The doc further explained that the tumor was likely caused by a blow to his head (i.e., Patrick's abuse), then elaborated the risks of removing the tumor. Ryan and Erin were faced with a difficult decision: Have him undergo life-threatening surgery, or allow the tumor to slowly kill him? Ryan was also struck by the realization that Greenlee was right: Lavery isn't destiny. The sibs then decided to authorize the operation for Jon.
Josh listened in while Garret gave another one of his slyly creepy pep talks to Danielle. When she accused him of trying to kiss her, Garret asked Dani if she wanted him to, then kissed her on the forehead. Garret left, at which point Josh told a glum Dani that Garret was definitely coming on to her. Dani sighed that Mimi would flip if she told her what was going on. Mimi then entered. Dani was on the verge of 'fessing up when Derek walked in as well. When Derek sang Garret's praises, Dani kept her mouth shut.
Kendall made it clear to Zach that he couldn't stop her from becoming the surrogate mother to Greenlee and Ryan's baby. Zach scoffed when Kendall accused him of being jealous. When Zach accused Greenlee of taking advantage of Kendall, Hart warned Zach not to take it any further. When she threatened him with divorce, he left. Kendall urged Greens not to fret about Zach.
Tad and Aidan tried to figure out where Julia might have gone when she left the attic. Aidan told Tad that the alleged letter was a new twist in the case and he asked Tad why he wasn't tearing up Pine Valley to find the letter. Tad told Aidan that there was no letter and Dixie just told Zach that because she thought he was a hit man. Tad tried to convince Aidan that if Dixie could help Julia she would.
Babe continued to keep a vigil at Little Adam's hospital bedside. Dixie hugged Babe and told her that she was the reason Little Adam survived his accident. Just as Babe was leaving the hospital room to wash up, Zach told her that they had work to do. Babe told him that he was wasting her time, but he said that if she wanted to bury Dixie she would have to get her hands dirty. Zach briefed Babe about the "insurance" letter Dixie wrote and that he was sure it was stashed at the Chandler mansion. Babe informed Zach that the mansion was 10,000 square feet not including the secret passages, stables and the gatehouse. Babe told him that in the three hours of supervised visitation she gets each week, unless it was in Little Adam's diaper, there was no way for her to find it. Zach grabbed her arm and Babe pulled away just as J.R. and Dixie left the room. Babe told J.R. and Dixie that Zach was asking crazy questions about Di Kirby. The nurse gave J.R. release papers for Little Adam. Babe told the baby that she would see him next week and J.R. said that if there was no social worker there would be no visitation. Back at the Chandler Mansion Babe and Tad and Julia, not knowing the other was there, were in the secret passageways looking for the letter that Di Kirby had written.
Erica was very nervous about the debut of "New Beginnings." She told Jack that all she really wanted to do was hide in her bed. Jack told her to face the fear and that he and Lily would be there for her. Lily brought her a purple blanket and a teapot with all Erica's favorite herbal teas. Greenlee and Kendall arrived and gave Erica a framed picture of Miranda's handprints and a poem written by Bianca. Greenlee gave Erica a huge bouquet from her and Ryan and told her that Ryan was her biggest fan. As Kendall and Greenlee were about to leave Zach showed up. He handed Erica a gift of an engraved plaque with the words New Beginnings. Zach asked them why they were rushing this baby. He told Greenlee that she wanted a baby for all the wrong reasons. Kendall, thinking that Zach was about to tell Erica about the surrogacy, said she would rather tell Erica herself. Just as Kendall was about to tell Erica of the baby plan, Zach interrupted and instead told Erica that they were going to open a new wing at the Miranda Center in Ryan's name. Zach asked Kendall if after carrying this child would she be able to give it up?
Ryan struggled with how to tell Jonathan that he had a brain tumor. He and Erin woke Jonathan up, but Jonathan told them they had to go so he wouldn't hurt them. He begged Ryan to untie him and stop the ticking in his head. Ryan assured Jonathan that they would stop the pain and the voices. He and Erin told Jonathan that he had a brain tumor and that it had been there a long time. They explained that the tumor coupled with the anti-psychotic drugs were the reason for his violent behavior. Ryan told him to think about a good day where there was no pain or fear and that they could make him that way again. Ryan told Jonathan that it was a risky surgery and that he may die. Jonathan apologized to Ryan and Erin for all he had done and they told him all they wanted to was to have him back. Jonathan went to surgery accusing Ryan of trying to kill him.
Zach urged Kendall not to go through with the carrying of Ryan and Greenlee's baby, saying that it would be too difficult for Kendall to give the baby up. After all, Kendall had once claimed that Ryan was the true love of her life. A concerned Greenlee had been quietly and secretly listening to the conversation from nearby. She emerged and announced that "Zach had a point." However, Greenlee quickly brushed off all implications that Greenlee would bar Kendall from being a part of the baby's life, saying that Kendall would have "full access."
In Canada, Ryan and Erin began a nervous six-hour wait for the completion of the risky surgery to remove a tumor from Jonathan's brain. Ryan became grim-faced when he realized that Greenlee had been right when she claimed that Patrick Lavery was not the cause of the Lavery children's dysfunction. Erin asked Ryan about his relationship with Greenlee, but Ryan repeatedly dodged the questions. After Erin revealed that she had never been in love with a man and never allowed anyone to feel for her, Ryan opened up. He told his sister of his love with Gillian and how her life had been cut short. He then explained that he felt that Greenlee was also the love of his life... but that that was not the case any more. Erin and Ryan then pondered whether or not there really was no Lavery Curse and that they were all individually responsible for their respective unhappiness.
Erica launched her new talk show, New Beginnings, with a splashy and star-studded tribute to New York City. Erica explained that the city had been the place where she had made her own new beginning when she entered the world of modeling. New York, she said, was also a shining example of new beginnings. The city had banded together in the wake of the terrorist attacks of September 11th and was beginning a new. Erica's guests on the show were also examples of new beginnings. Erica made an appearance at NASDAQ to ring the opening bell. The seven-story building also proudly displayed an advertisement for Erica's talk show. Her first guest, former New York mayor Rudolph Guiliani talked of being in New York during the terror attacks and later spoke of his transition back to the private sector. Erica then traveled to the recently-rehabbed Grand Central Terminal. There, the chief architect involved in the restoration project revealed that the terminal had once been the target of demolition plans. It wasn't until former First Lady Jackie Kennedy became involved that the terminal became a landmark and was spared from the wrecking ball. Next up was a visit to the store of Mary Norton, founder of Moo Roo, a collection of glamorous handbags. Ms. Norton started the company after a terrible bout of postpartum depression, saying that ailment had basically crippled her everyday life. One night she prayed for the guidance and ability to overcome the battle with depression and subsequently dreamed of a flowery purse. Ms. Norton had no previous design experience, but made her own new beginning by making purses anyway. At a rooftop bar, Erica chatted up fashion commentator Simon Doonan, who said that women have more fashion options today than ever before. He also touted the notion that making a new beginning with a new outfit can help inspire changes in other areas of one's life. Erica then visited the human beatbox, Doug E. Fresh, in Harlem at the renowned soul food restaurant Sylvia's. The tie-in there was discussion of yet another renaissance in Harlem and how the section of New York was becoming a hip and trendy place all over again. Erica later visited and got hosting tips from Regis Philbin and the ladies of The View (minus Barbara Walters). Later, Erica traveled to Bryant Park to take in a concert by Clay Aiken. Aiken discussed how, as a UNICEF ambassador of education, had visited parts of Asia that had been devastated by the tsunami. [Editor's Note: This episode was taped well in advance of the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina]. Finally, Erica was back in her studio with Jack and Lily in the front row listening to the wondering sounds of the stars of the Broadway musical All Shook Up. The show went off without a hitch, but the show almost didn't happen at all because Lily warned Erica that there were people all over that wanted to hurt her; Lily had taken their "break a leg" remarks a little too literally.
Reggie arrives at the studio as Erica gets a quick touch up before the second half of her show begins. He apologizes for being late and wishes her well before she runs back on to the set. Once she settles in, Erica introduces a series of segments where she: visits Yankee Stadium and talks with pitcher Al Leiter; meets with former New York mayor David Dinkins (who gives her updates on what he's doing, including his involvement with the New York Junior Tennis League); meets up with New York Knicks player Allan Houston; visits with Tiki Barber of the New York Giants; interviews former New York mayor Ed Koch; stops by Mount Sinai Medical Center and talks with Dr. Silverstein (a one-time high school teacher and who now delivers babies); and wraps up with a trip to Gracie Mansion and chats with the current Mayor, Michael Bloomberg.
Erica returns to the office and gets showered in rave reviews from her staff and beloved family. Val confirms that the show is a hit to more than just those who hold her near and dear reviews, websites and blogs have already popped up online, singing her praises. In offering congratulations, Reggie causes Lily to ask questions that neither he nor their father really want to answer, so Reggie escapes by claiming to need a drink. He goes behind a partition to a refreshment-laden table, just in time to see Dani emerge from the elevator. He tries to blow her off, telling her that Josh is in the studio if she wants to go talk to him but Dani refuses to be ignored. She confirms that she showed up hoping to talk with her ex-boyfriend. As Jack makes a toast to Erica, Dani pleads with Reggie to help her out. She tries to tell him about the predicament she is wrapped up in, and how she knows that he is good at figuring out solutions, but he quickly interjects that he wasn't good enough for her when she had him. She was hoping that they could just talk but Reggie doesn't want to hear anything she has to say. Lily, who had been looking at them from the other side of the partition, joins her brother once Dani takes her leave. She asks Reggie what he said to make Dani so sad, but he tells her it doesn't matter because they are no longer together. Lily tells him that they could be, simply because they both still care about each other. Reggie denies it, but Lily says that she is really good at reading facial expressions because she learned about them in her Life Skills class. Reggie tells her that life is different than her class, but she assures him that she studied extra hard so that she get it right. She also notes that his routine has changed, and that he doesn't spend as much time on himself in the mornings as he did when he was dating Dani. She illustrates what he used to do, and even though Reggie denies it, Lily has an answer at the ready: he doesn't do these things anymore, but he would if he mended fences with Dani.
At the hospital, Erin and Ryan discuss Jonathan's situation and agree that because of the tumor, they don't think Jonathan should be responsible for all of the things he did. Erin goes on to say that they should all be afforded a fresh start in life and that Ryan could go back to Greenlee and tell her he was wrong. She reminds her brother that he isn't Patrick Lavery incarnate, and that Greenlee was right about who he really is. Erin believes that Ryan got so wrapped up in the family drama that he self-destructed. Ryan agrees but knows that he can't just go back to Pine Valley and expect everything to go back to the way it was. Ryan admits that when he found out that Greenlee was pregnant with his child, he knew he had to die because there was no way in the world he was capable of raising a son or daughter. Erin recognizes what Ryan is saying as something that lives in her, and knows that Ryan is telling her the truth. They talk a bit more about Erin's lack of a maternal instinct, but Ryan assures her that she is merely ahead of most people by knowing what she wants, and what she doesn't want. Before they can delve any further into the subject, a voice from the hall calls to Ryan, asking why everyone thinks he is dead. A man strolls into the room, and even through Ryan vehemently denies it, the man isn't deterred. He notes that he never forgets a face, especially if it's the face of someone who took him for a lot of money. Erin joins in the protesting, but the man ignores her too, saying that Ryan went by Will Walsh when they crossed paths. The siblings continue to try to convince the man that he has the wrong person, but the man simply goes on to talk about the obituary he read, and finding out that Ryan was once the Cambias heir but is now revealed to be nothing but a conman. He asserts that he will blow the lid off of the secret that Ryan is actually alive. He starts to leave, but Erin tries to placate him with a generic version of the reason they are there. The man doesn't give an inch, and after a moment where Ryan and Erin consider still trying to get the guy off their case, Ryan breaks first. He admits that he took the guy for a lot of money, and that it felt good. This gives the man license to really try to hit home so he asks if Ryan's former wife is in on the scam, and if she'll be splitting the insurance money with him. This gets Ryan where it hurts and he gets in the man's face and demands that he leave Greenlee out of his attack. Realization dawning, the man asks Ryan what his former wife would do if she found out he was still alive. Reining his anger in, Ryan realizes that he has to find a way to strike back that will shut the guy up. He starts to question why he's at the hospital, and he and Erin soon realize that it's not to visit a sick family member or friend. Erin makes a sudden move and grabs the papers the man had been holding. While Ryan holds him back, they see that he is there to sell lousy insurance coverage to sick people. Ryan breaks it down for the guy: they agree to stay out of each other's' lives, because if he finds out that the guy started talking, started rumours about Ryan being alive, Ryan will get the cops on his trail and get him sent away to prison for 5-10 years. Angry that he can't cash in without paying a hefty price, the man grabs his papers and leaves, noting that Greenlee is better off without Ryan before making his final exit. Erin is giddy with pride over how Ryan handled that guy, but Ryan is wary even though one person has been taken care of, that might not be the end of their problems. In fact, it might just be the beginning. Erin wonders aloud if Ryan might want to really try coming back from the dead, but Ryan confirms that he needs to stay dead at least as far as everyone in Pine Valley is concerned. She then asks about Slater he knows Ryan is alive, and what is keeping him from confessing all he knows? Ryan tells her that Slater wants him dead so Ryan can trust that Slater will keep his mouth shut.
Greenlee tells Zach that he will never understand the choice that she and Kendall made but Zach is incredulous that they can't grasp what he's saying: two seemingly intelligent women, willing to do something that will not only wreck their lives but the life of the resulting child and they don't think there is anything wrong with that? He suggests yet again that they get an impartial third party to be the surrogate, because Kendall carrying Ryan's baby would be an emotional roller coaster. Greenlee assures Kendall that everything will be all right but Kendall turns around to faces her and tells her that she can't. After a moment of strained silence, Kendall finishes the thought by saying that she can't let a stranger bring a miracle into the world for Greenlee. She pushes the button to call the elevator, and tells Greenlee that they should head over to the clinic to harvest her eggs. Near tears, Greenlee asks one more time if Kendall is certain, and Kendall confirms that she is. Kendall tells her beloved hubby to get a new hobby, and she and her best friend hop in the elevator and leave. Zach stalks around the room for a moment, picks up a picture advertising Erica's new show and, disgusted, flings it to the floor and walks out.
At the clinic, Kendall tries to calm down a very nervous Greenlee as Dr. Madden's assistant Hazel preps the drugs that will be dripped into her system. Dr. Madden comes in and Greenlee starts voicing her fears to him about how she's completely awake and conscious, and how she is going to end up feeling everything that he does. He assures her that she won't and that in fact, she won't remember a thing. He asks Kendall to step out of the room, and although Greenlee begs her not to go, she does indeed leave. Greg asks Hazel to start the drip, and then tries to distract Greenlee by asking if she had thought of any names. Greenlee is wise to his game and swears that she isn't going to fall for it, but as he lays her back on the table, she notes aloud that she is starting to feel very good. A short time later, Kendall pokes Greenlee's hand as the patient starts to come around. Believing that the process is just starting, Greenlee halfheartedly threatens to sue if she feels any pain. Laughing, Hazel notes that her job is now done. Incredulously, Greenlee starts to realize that her eggs have been retrieved and the "worst" is over. Dr. Madden confirms that they extracted 12 eggs and then goes off to complete the fertilization process. With a gleam in her eye, Greenlee joyfully shares the thrill of impending motherhood with Kendall.
Greenlee and Kendall arrive back at Greenlee's apartment, and Kendall immediately starts to take care of Greenlee even though Greenlee feels it should be the other way around. Just then, the phone rings and Kendall takes the call. She launches into a caustic denial of rights to talk to Greenlee, and soon reveals that Mary Smythe is on the other end. Mary apparently doesn't believe that her daughter would refuse to talk to her, so Kendall hands the phone over, advising her best friend to either hang up on her or put her in her place. Greenlee takes the phone, and after a moment's consideration, greets her mother and tells her that she's glad to hear from her.
As Greenlee wraps up her phone call, Kendall brings out a tray with tea and cookies. When Greenlee hangs up the phone, Kendall questions why shee held back her ire. Greenlee admits that she was on the verge, and then had a flash where she was in her mother's shoes, squaring off with her own feisty daughter. In that instant, she realized that she couldn't do it. Despite the fact that Mary has been an awful mother, Greenlee notes that she tried everything she could think of and gave as much as she could. She further notes that Mary has always sought stability in all the wrong places, and has never really been happy. Greenlee admits that at least she had that. Kendall thinks that Mary deserved to be yelled at, but understands where Greenlee is coming from. Then, Greenlee says that she has a confession, and she hopes that it won't make Kendall change her mind.
Zach shows up at the Valley Inn, and joins Myrtle at a table near the bar. After imbibing a nip of scotch, Zach spills the beans about Kendall and Greenlee's plan to bring a child fathered by Ryan into the world. Myrtle thinks there is something wrong with them, and Zach wants to know why everyone in Pine Valley wants to erect a shrine to Ryan. Myrtle asks whether Zach's real concern is the group of people who will always love Ryan or his wife. Zach sidesteps the question by simply saying that he can't understand why Kendall would risk her health and the last of her mental stability to bring a child into the world whose father was so dangerous. Myrtle tells him that Ryan was a good and upstanding man until his brother came to town and that is who his "fans" love. She then asks again what his reasons are for being so concerned and why it is that he is so hesitant to tell her. Zach swears that his only issue is why people think so highly of Ryan, but Myrtle doesn't believe him for a minute. She informs him that if he doesn't want to tell her that's his choice; however, he owes the truth to Kendall and Greenlee before they go too far with their plan.
Greenlee confesses to Kendall that when she married Ryan, she really loved him. She told Kendall at the time that it was about the money and the company and the stocks, but really she couldn't have cared less. She just wanted Ryan. Kendall tells her best friend that she was already in the know about it, and has gotten over it a million times since then. She just wants them to look forward to a bright future where she carries Greenlee's baby to term, and a happy life beyond. She starts to say something else but falters. Greenlee coaxes her, saying that now that her eggs have been harvested, she can take anything Kendall can throw at her. Kendall admits that she wishes Zach wasn't so against her carrying the baby. Greenlee asks why but Kendall can't really formulate an answer.
Zach tells Myrtle that he has a very good reason why Kendall and Greenlee shouldn't go through with having the baby, but if he confesses, things could get worse. Myrtle tells him that whatever his reason is, he either needs to come clean with the ladies, or stand behind them anything else is unfair. Zach agrees that things can't stay the way that they are but doesn't note whether he has made a decision either way. He tells Myrtle that he has to go, thanks her for the drink, and kisses her on the cheek before he leaves.
Amanda finds Aidan in a restaurant and tries to hit on him, but he does not seem thrilled about her company. Amanda toasts to herself and prides herself on stealing the now rich Jamie from Babe. Aidan offers his congratulations but wonders why she is there with him. Amanda responds that she is there to pass the time while Jamie studies, but Aidan walks away to greet his guest. Aidan asks the woman to get some information on an organization that is trying to bust, but before she can give him an answer, Amanda comes over and tries to spoil his meeting. When the woman sees Mimi and Garret walk in, she runs off, with Mimi following at her heels. Aidan runs after Mimi, who is in the alley looking for the woman. Mimi tells Aidan that she knows he is involved with Julia's case, but Aidan pretends not to know anything. Garret comes out to check on Mimi and he walks her back inside the restaurant. Amanda comes outside to gloat, but Aidan only calls her a pain with a whole lot of beauty.
Inside the restaurant, Garret publicly proclaims his love for Mimi with a dance and toast. She tells him that she loves him and they walk out as Amanda sips on her own alcoholic beverage. She insults Amanda, but still hits on him at the same time. Aidan says that she is just upset because he won't give in to her temptations. As soon as she walks out, Aidan goes to the bar and hears Amanda scream. Aidan goes to see what is wrong, assuming it is another one of Amanda's games, but he finds the woman dead in a pile of trash bags. Garret drops Mimi back off at her home, then brings up a picture of Danielle in the dressing room, fully clothed, with her bridesmaid gown on his camera phone.
Danielle is in Greenlee's apartment looking through Fusion samples when Garret comes up behind her and hands her a diamond necklace. Danielle does not answer and is surprised when he hands it to her mother as soon as she walks in the room. Mimi gushes over the present and asks Danielle to go out to dinner with them, but Danielle claims she has too much work to do. After Garret and Mimi leave, Reggie walks by and asks how Danielle is doing. She does not understand why he cares, but Reggie tells her that he wanted to help her with her problem. Before she can explain about Garret's odd behavior, Josh walks in, which makes Reggie immediately leave. Josh assumes that Reggie still cares about Danielle, but she says they are pretty over. Danielle tells Josh about the necklace incident, still thinking that Garret is not a bad guy. She tells Josh that she will just have to get through the wedding, no matter what he doubts are because Mimi is so happy.
Kendall looks through birthing books to understand how the baby will be born, but she gets too grossed out before she can even get past the first page. She tosses the book aside and picks up a beauty magazine, but before she gets a chance to see it, Zach comes over with a bottle of champagne. Kendall is skeptical about Zach wanting to celebrate the pregnancy plan since he was so against it. Zach admits that he was wrong and understands the bond that Kendall and Greenlee share. Kendall takes the alcohol and throws it outside, claiming that Zach is trying to get her drunk so she would change her mind. Kendall tells Zach that because he lost Julia, he is taking it out on her. He says that the marriage has turned out not the way he thought because he likes Kendall more now. Kendall says that their impressions of each other have changed over time. He thought Kendall was a ditz and Zach actually has a heart sometimes. When Kendall apologizes for throwing the champagne, Zach grabs a bottle of hers to use. Kendall asks him if he is OK with her carrying Greenlee's child once more. Zach says yes and Kendall grabs the wine glasses. He toasts to Kendall's courage and devotion to Greenlee. When Kendall offers to make them dinner, Zach leaves to go to an appointment. Zach breaks into a building and gets past the security alarm.
Tad finds Babe listening in the secret passage as Di and JR agree not to interfere with each other's love lives. When Di and JR leave the bedroom, Babe sneaks in and starts searching through the dresser drawers. Babe looks a picture of JR and little Adam, but her moment is interrupted when JR walks in and demands to know why she is there. Babe tries to pretend that she wanted a picture of JR and the baby, but then decides she was there to see Di to talk about spending more time with the baby. JR counters that Babe was there to find dirt on Di so Krystal can get back together with Tad. JR grabs Babe by the arm and leads her out the bedroom, giving Tad the chance to pick where Babe left off. Tad takes all of the items out of a drawer, turns it over and sees a letter that states not to be opened until after "my death or disappearance." Tad reads the letter which is from Di. Di writes, still claiming to be Dixie, how much she loves Tad.
Del finds Di in the library and she confesses that everyone wants answers. She knows that the real Dixie would tell the truth, but Di is scared that if she does, she will lose everything she has built up. Del tells her that he has lived with regrets his whole life, but Di does not think it is so easy. After all, she left home at 17 and hooked up with the first guy she met, thinking he would sweep her off her feet, Di said. When Del asked if the man was Kevin, she does not answer him, but only says that she stayed with the man because he pampered her beyond belief. Del finally understands why it is hard for Di to be honest because everyone around her has come to love her. He even agrees to help her keep up the fake identity.
Di walks back into her bedroom and sees Tad reading the letter. He tells her that they can still have their "together forever" and unless she is dying, she knows something about Julia's case. Di still pretends not to know anything, but Tad claims he knows "his Dixie" and the woman he knows would not lie to him. Julia listens as Tad tries to convince Di to be honest
