Moana 2's Production
Jennifer Lee, the chief creative officer of Walt Disney Animation Studios, revealed at a Disney Investor Day meeting in December 2020 that the studio was working on a long-form musical comedy series called Moana: The Series, which was based on the 2016 movie of the same name and would debut on Disney+ in 2023.
It was announced in August 2021 that Osnat Shurer will be returning as producer. After working as the storyboard artist for the first movie, David Derrick Jr. was revealed to be the writer and director in January 2022. According to Jared Bush, a screenwriter for the 2016 animated feature and one of the film's authors, the series started development at the same time as the live-action Moana remake.
With Derrick and Shurer still involved, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced in February 2024 that the series had been adapted into a motion picture sequel called Moana 2. By May, when the first trailer was released, it was known that Christina Chen and Yvett Merino would be replacing Shurer as the film's producers and that Jason Hand and Dana Ledoux Miller would co-direct with Derrick.
What is the story of Moana?
Moana is set in ancient Polynesia and follows the story of Moana, the independent daughter of a coastal village chief, who is selected by the ocean to bring the goddess Te Fiti and a mysterious relic back to her. To return the relic to Te Fiti and save her people, Moana sets off in search of Maui, a famous demigod, after a blight attacks her island. Whilst the story is original, Polynesian myths serve as an inspiration for the movie.
