
Jonathan E. Bernthal is an American actor known for his work in film, television, and theater. Born in Washington, D.C., he is the son of Joan Marx and entertainment lawyer Eric Bernthal. His grandfather was musician and theatrical producer Murray Bernthal. He graduated from Skidmore College and later trained at the Moscow Art Theatre School. He also co- founded the award-winning Fovea Floods Theatre alongside teachers and alumni from Skidmore College.
Bernthal’s early career featured stage performances across the country, where he appeared in productions such as “Fifth of July,” “This is Our Youth,” and “Without a Trace.” His transition to television began with guest appearances in shows like “Law & Order: Criminal Intent (2002)” where he played Lane Ruddock and “Without a Trace (2004)” where he portrayed Alex Genya.
His career in film began with the 2002 romantic-comedy “Mary/Mary” where he was cast as Manny. Bernthal is a Primetime Emmy Award winner and has featured in notable films such as “The Wolf of Wall Street (2013),” “The Fury (2014),” “The Accountant (2016),” and “King Richard (2021).”
Bernthal recently reprised his role as The Punisher in Marvel’s “Daredevil: Born Again (2025).” His upcoming projects include James Hawes’ “The Amateur (2025),” Gavin O’ Connor’s “The Accountant 2 (2025),” and Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey (2026).”
