"I don't think it was an experience any of us had before," Joseph Quinn on his character in 'Warfare'

Before Joseph Quinn flames on for his new MCU adventure in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, he's going guns blazing in Warfare. The film opens today in the United States, but it has already shown its potential in its earlier screenings and now sits with a healthy score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Quinn plays a leading petty officer, Sam, in the film alongside D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai as Ray Mendoza, Will Poulter as Erik, Cosmo Jarvis as Elliot Miller, and more. Recently, he was asked whether his role was harder or easier in the film by DiscussingFilm. To that, he first gave it a quick thought: "Was it harder or easier?" Then he said,

"It was certainly singular. I don't think it was an experience that any of us had had before. We were depicting real men, and a lot of the cases the men that we were depicting would be on set. And so you're aware of the responsibility there and the reverence that's required."

He again said, "Was it harder or easier?" But this time, he was answering rather than questioning himself as he told the interviewer,

"It felt more meaningful."

Critics are convinced that this is one of the most realistic depictions of combat in cinema; we will soon hear about it from the fans after they've left the theaters after watching it.

Joseph Quinn's past roles haven't thrown him on a battlefield like in Warfare

Joseph Quinn made his first feature film debut with Overlord (2018), but that was more focused on an alternate history of D-Day, or the infamous Normandy landings, the largest seaborne invasion the world has ever seen. He played Grunauer, but his role was short-lived.

Now, he is a part of modern combat in Warfare, which is based on a real incident that Ray Mendoza, who also co-writes and directs the film alongside Alex Garland, experienced during his time in Iraq.

Putting Warfare and Overlord aside, his other roles include the mad Emperor Geta in Gladiator II (2024), a death angel invasion survivor, Eric in A Quiet Place: Day One (2024), an idiosyncratic leader in Stranger Things (2022), and more.

Quinn explains the preparation they did for the film

Before the soldiers are deployed on a battlefield, they have to go through rigorous preparations and learn to cover their comrades' backs. Joseph Quinn appeared alongside his fellow comrades in the film, Cosmo Jarvis and Kit Connor in an interview with MovieWeb, describing their preparation for Warfare. He said,

"We worked out together, we ate together, we slept near each other in the same place, and that kind of , really built this, kind of, brotherly bond."

There was a funny aspect to this when he explained that Cosmo Jarvis struggled to keep himself from laughing.

We already saw in the film's trailer how the soldiers kept the environment from being chaotic, with Quinn's character scouting and Cosmo Jarvis on sniper duty. However, it certainly gets messy when they all go gun blazing later.

In addition to that, it gave us a glimpse of formations and accuracy of the rules of engagement that are pivotal to a soldier's and the squad's survival. Not everyone can dodge the raining bullets in it.
