Actor and former boxer Mickey Rourke seems to have landed in controversy following his comment about singer JoJo Siwa on the reality TV show Big Brother.
As seen in the video from a recent episode, Rourke asked Siwa where the smoke room was. The singer then escorted him to the room, and as they walked, Rourke asked her:
“So, do you like boys or girls?”
Siwa replied:
“Me? Girls.”
Rourke’s immediate reaction was that he could grasp that. Responding to Rourke’s comment, the singer said her partner was non-binary before directing him to the smoke room. However, he commented:
“If I stay longer than four days, you won’t be gay anymore.”
JoJo Siwa responded that she was not so sure about that, as she could guarantee that she would still be gay. While Mickey Rourke conversed with the other contestants, he confirmed that they were required to vote each other out, to which he said:
“I am gonna vote the lesbian out real quick.”
Siwa’s immediate response was:
“That’s homophobic. So, that’s homophobic if that was your reasoning.”
Soon after the incident, Rourke received a formal warning from “Big Brother” after he was called to the Diary Room. He was told:
“Mickey, Big Brother thinks your language was offensive and unacceptable.”
Mickey Rourke said he understood the situation. They told him that if he used similar language or acted that way again, he could be removed from the house.
Mickey Rourke apologizes to JoJo Siwa, calling out his habit of “having a short fuse”
Mickey Rourke told Big Brother he was sorry and didn’t mean harm as he was joking around. Later, he told the other housemates that he got scolded in the Diary Room. During his interaction with the singer, he reiterated that he would vote JoJo Siwa out, referring to her as “lesbian.”
One of the participants, TV host Chris Hughes, said he couldn’t do that while the singer replied:
“You also can’t say that.”
Siwa then had an emotional moment as she cried, hugging Hughes. In another segment, Rourke was seen apologizing to Siwa, saying:
“I want to apologize. I just got a short bad habit of having a short fuse. I don’t mean nothing by it.”
JoJo Siwa accepted the apology as Mickey Rourke said he wouldn’t repeat that. As the episode continued, Hughes explained to him that even if he didn’t mean it, others could still take it differently, adding that JoJo had been quite upset.
Mickey Rourke then turned to Siwa and apologized, asking if things were okay between them. JoJo Siwa responded by saying that the word he used was unacceptable going forward.
Meanwhile, a spokesperson for the show told The Independent that all housemates go through Respect and Inclusion training and receive a detailed briefing from the senior Big Brother team to help them understand the expected behavior and language in the house.
They also mentioned that contestants are monitored around the clock, and any inappropriate behavior is addressed quickly.
