Weekend one, and A Minecraft Movie already dethroned The Super Mario Bros. Movie (2023) as it goes on to earn $163 million in its first weekend, toppling the latter's $146 million opener. In just five days of its release, the Jack Black film has generated a towering $336 million globally; $185 million of it came domestically. The Super Mario Bros. Movie earned $204 million domestically when it was five days into its release.
Now it's time to look for the second weekend, where predictions are that the latest video game film is likely to pull in around $65 million from the box office at a 60% drop. For The Super Mario Bros. Movie, it was a 36% drop into its second weekend, generating $92 million.
Moving ahead, A Minecraft Movie could be looking for a banger Easter weekend that runs between the coming of April 18 and April 20. As Deadline notes (and ComScore reports), "that 10% of K-12 schools are off this Friday and 1% colleges, moving to 72% K-12 off, 28% colleges on break on Good Friday, April 18."
$65 million or not, A Minecraft Movie is already a winner for the second weekend
Captain America: Brave New World appears no closer to being in the race; it's been 7 weeks since it was released, and it earned $1 million in the domestic box office in the latest weekend. Even if we compare its opener to the Jack Black film, it earned almost half of what A Minecraft Movie earned.
Other than the block-building video game film, movies merely reached $10 million on the weekend. A Working Man earned $7 million, followed by The Chosen: Last Supper Part 2 with almost the same and Snow White with $6 million. And the numbers will keep lowering as we scroll through that list, so we have a clear winner for the upcoming weekend too.
Two big releases are due in April 2025, Rami Malek's The Amateur and Warfare, but the latter can be a potential box-office contender for Minecraft's film adaptation, as the former will get a limited release.
Early reviews of Warfare are already giving the audience a hint that the film is likely the most realistic depiction of combat in cinema yet. That is one intriguing fact to pull in the audience. However, that's not for the kids so A Minecraft Movie is again likely to be a winner, as it has got space for all ages.
A look ahead for the rest of the 2025
A Minecraft Movie's success is likely to be short-lived, and fans will be looking forward to the real deal that's coming in the rest of 2025. To begin with, we have a couple of Marvel Cinematic Universe films, Thunderbolts* and The Fantastic Four: First Steps, due in May and July, respectively.
We want to take Final Destination Bloodlines and Happy Gilmore 2 into consideration, but they aren't likely to give a commercial competition to A Minecraft Movie. Critical? Why not. But Ballerina and How to Train Your Dragon, both of which are coming in June 2025, pose serious box-office threats to the Minecraft film adaptation.
And lastly, the biggest of bangers, Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning, is likely to end the year with the film of the year.
