Actor Hiroyuki Sanada was born in Japan on October 12, 1960. He has starred in many Japanese films including Shogun's Samurai, G.I. Samurai, Samurai Reincarnation, Legend of the Eight Samurai, House on Fire, Yellow Fangs, and the well-known Ring, Spiral, and Ring 2, in which he played Ryūji Takayama. He has been featured in several American projects, including Rush Hour 3, Speed Racer, 47 Ronin, Minions, Mortal Kombat, Army of the Dead, Westworld, Bullet Train, and John Wick: Chapter 4.


At the age of five, he started his career in the middle of the 1960s as Sonny Chiba's apprentice. Originally known for his roles in action movies from Hong Kong and Japan, this Kyokushin Karate black belt subsequently made a name for himself as a dedicated actor.

Hiroyuki Sanada’s most recent role as Lord Yoshii Toranaga in the American historical drama series Shōgun has earned him praise from critics and fans. The actor has received numerous awards for his performance and for producing the series.


Lord Yoshii Toranaga is the lord of Kantō and a formidable warrior (bushō). He was a member of the five Regents who ruled Japan on behalf of the young heir to the late Taikō. He is descended from the Minowara clan, often known as the Minamoto clan, who were shōguns who formerly ruled over Japan. He has a sharp intellect for both political and military strategy.


Lord Toranaga is a fiery leader and a clever tactician. When it comes to planning and strategizing for the future, he is far ahead of the others. Also, he has no fear of being ousted or dying.
