Peter, in a desperate attempt to protect his loved ones, chooses to give up on a future with them. Peter sacrifices the chance of having a future with MJ. When the villains from the multiverse arrived and created chaos, Peter lost his aunt and almost lost Ned and MJ as well.

He understood that he posed a threat to the people he was close to. So to send the villains back to their own realities, he asked Doctor Strange to help him erase the memory and make the world forget that Peter Parker is Spider-Man. This drastic measure, though done for the sake of the safety of others, makes him lose his relationship with MJ.

She no longer remembers anything about Peter. She no longer remembers the history they shared and the emotions they had for one another. His selfless act has resonated with the viewers.


2)William Traynor in Me Before You

Initially, Will and Louisa have a strained relationship. Louisa is hired to take care of William after his accident. The accident left William unable to walk. As he used to have an athletic and active life before his accident, after the incident, he has become depressed and cynical. Louisa has a vibrant and lively personality. She takes on the charge to reawaken William’s zest for life before he decides to end his life.

Throughout the movie, they start to develop feelings for one another. Their bond grows stronger and stronger. Will even gets Louisa a thoughtful gift for her birthday, which turned out to be just the thing that she wanted. However, even after having romantic feelings for Louisa, he chose to end his life.

Though his decision is rooted in his inability to accept his paralysed state, he also added that he gave up on a future with Louisa. His choice was deeply personal and was not an easy choice for him. It heavily impacted Louisa. Will’s death left her heartbroken. She has transformed with the love she got from Will.


3)Ben in Leaving Las Vegas

Leaving Las Vegas gives a glimpse of a tragically different kind of giving up on love. Ben is an alcoholic screenwriter struggling in his life. He decides to travel to Las Vegas and drink himself to death. However, in Las Vegas, he meets Sera. Sera is a prostitute with her own vulnerabilities.

They form an unconventional relationship as they find solace and a strange form of acceptance in each other’s company. Though initially they had a perfect relationship, slowly things start to take a different turn. Even though Sera tried her best to make Ben happy, he could not be swayed from his self-destructive path. Ben refuses to seek help despite Sera’s pleas.

His ultimate death is a heartbreaking example of how addiction can lead to someone abandoning not just their own life but also the possibility of love and a connection. Ben’s giving up is a surrender to his demons, tragically pushing away the very person who offered a glimmer of hope.


4)Rick Blaine in Casablanca

Rick is an American expatriate running a nightclub in Casablanca during World War II. Even though he refused to get involved with the conflict, he inadvertently becomes involved in it. His relationship with Ilsa Lund had hardened him. So when she returns, he is forced to confront his past once again.

Even though he still loved her immensely, he made the selfless decision to help her and Victor escape. He understood the greater importance of their mission and Ilsa’s commitment to it. The poignant farewell at the airport and giving up on his own chance at happiness with her. His bittersweet acceptance of their lost love and noble sacrifices for a cause that was larger than himself.

Even though the main narrative is about Ally’s music career and her relationship with Jackson, in the movie, the way Jackson gives up on their relationship is truly tragic and heartbreaking. He became more and more insecure and self-destructive. This ultimately led to his suicide.
