Special explores Who Shot the Daytime Soap?

After several years of dreadful news and cancellations, the soap genre has come back from the proverbial dead. But what caused the decline -- or has the death of the soap opera been greatly exaggerated? A new documentary sets out to answer that question.

If you want to know the truth of a situation, ask someone who was there. The upcoming documentary Who Shot the Daytime Soap? does just that -- and to great effect.

Those interested in hearing straight from the stars and creators about where soaps have been and where they're going will want to tune in on Monday, December 16, 2013, at 8PM ET/PT, when the TV Guide Network (TVGN) will air an hour-long documentary titled Who Shot the Daytime Soap?.

Soap operas are a beloved but, lately, troubled genre. The documentary, a must watch for soap fans, is obviously made by people who love and appreciate soaps and their fans. It takes an honest look at what caused the cancellation of so many of our beloved soaps while also paying homage to their history and what made, and continues to make, them great.

Tristan Rogers, who is featured in the documentary, recently took to Twitter to encourage fans to watch. Speaking about his move from General Hospital to The Young and the Restless, he said, "I am passionate about daytime drama. Wherever I work. I want to do the best I can. So let's be bipartisan and support the genre." He then went on to encourage people to tune in to the documentary and called it "a significant comment on what has happened in daytime made by those who were there."

A significant comment on what happened is exactly what Who Shot the Daytime Soap? delivers. Interviews with people involved in every facet of soap operas take an honest and insightful look at what has gone right and what has gone wrong in the rich history of scripted daytime television.

"I just don't think you can kill a medium with this kind of power," says Linda Dano in the opening of Who Shot the Daytime Soap?. However, there's no denying that, in the past several years, soaps have, at the very least, been seriously wounded. Fans may be surprised to learn just how those in front of the camera and those behind the scenes of soaps trace the wounds back to O.J. Simpson.

Fans will likely not be surprised by the love that soap stars and creators have for the genre and its fans. Even when discussing cancellations and missteps, that love for the medium and those who support it shines through the documentary and makes it a pleasure to watch.

Who Shot the Daytime Soap? features insights on the genre from soap writers, producers, and a lineup of daytime stars too numerous to list, which includes Crystal Chappell (Olivia Spencer, Guiding Light; Carly Manning, Days of Our Lives; Gina Brogno, Venice), Linda Dano (Felicia Gallant, Another World; Rae Cummings, All My Children), Kristoff St. John (Neil Winters, The Young and the Restless; Adam Marshall, Generations), Susan Lucci (Erica Kane, All My Children), Michael Muhney (Adam Newman, The Young and the Restless), and Tristan Rogers (Robert Scorpio, General Hospital; Colin Atkinson, The Young and the Restless; Lex Martin, The Bay), among others.

The documentary, producted by Associated Television International, will premiere on TVGN at 2PM ET/PT on Monday, December 16, 2013. It will also air at 8PM ET/PT December 16, 2013; 10:30AM and 5PM ET/PT December 17, 2013; 9AM ET/PT December 18, 2013; and 10:30AM ET/PT December 19, 2013.
