Phoebe asks him the reason for the disturbance for which he awkwardly explains that he was talking about how beautiful she was, and Phoebe likes it. In the same episode, their relationship quickly progresses and she even breaks the pact of “no date” for New Year's so that she can invite David to the party. David wanted to tell Phoebe that he loved her but in his opinion, it would make it more difficult for him to say goodbye to her before leaving for Minsk again. They had an emotional goodbye.
In season 9, episode 6 titled “The One with the Male Nanny”, David returns to New York for his work for a few weeks and turns up at Phoebe’s house to meet her. This time Phoebe was already in a relationship with Mike but she lies to David that she is not seeing anyone. Later on she comes clean to him but they end up kissing and Mike walks in. Phoebe explains everything to Mike and assures him that this won’t happen again.
In the same season, David appears again in episode 22 titled “The One with the Donor”. This time Phoebe was single and was going to a party to show Mike that she moved on from him. The final appearance of David was in the final episode of season 9 titled “The One in Barbados”. David decides to propose to Phoebe on the advice of Chandler. The whole group heads to Barbados for Ross’s conference. Monica calls Mike to let him know that he should come to Barbados and talk things out with Phoebe because David is going to propose to her. Mike realizes his mistake and shows up at the hotel right when David is going to propose. Mike confesses his love to Phoebe and asks her to marry him; but she says no because she never wanted a proposal from him, she just wanted to know that they have a future together. On the other hand, David understands the situation and leaves for good.
