Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 is currently under production in New York. Charlie Cox, Vincent D'Onofrio, Wilson Bethel, Michael Gandolfini, Clark Johnson, and Ayelet Zurer are reprising their respective roles in the upcoming season. This season, which is currently filming, has seen several set leaks. The most important leak is that of Charlie Cox ditching the red suit in favor of a black one.
While this costume change looks like the typical costume change on the surface, fans who have read Daredevil comics for a decade will know that this is no ordinary suit. The black suit donned by Matt Murdock in season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again is ripped right from the pages of the 2010 Marvel crossover event Shadowland.
After the release of the season 1 finale, Variety interviewed actor Vincent D'Onofrio, who has been playing the role of Wilson Fisk/Kingpin for an entire decade now. In this interview with Variety's online news editor Jordan Moreau, D'Onofrio was asked if the Shadowland storyline would be followed in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2. Though the actor did not give a definite answer to the question, his response was an interesting one.
What did Vincent D'Onofrio say about Daredevil: Born Again Season 2?
Variety's Jordan Moreau asked Vincent D’Onofrio the following question:
"I’m a fan of the “Daredevil” comics, especially the “Shadowland” storyline. We’ve seen photos of Charlie Cox in the black costume from “Shadowland.” Is that something we’d see in Season 2?"
D’Onofrio responded:
"That’s a very good question. I don’t know if I can answer that question. But it’s a good one. You’re obviously following the story in a good way."
Based on the Wilson Fisk actor's quote above, we can determine that at least some portion of the upcoming season of Daredevil: Born Again will be inspired by the 2010 popular comic book crossover event Shadowland. In that crossover, Matt Murdock's dark turn has a supernatural bent, involving the mysterious Ninja group The Hand. However, the series until now has maintained some level of realism.
However, it must be noted that Daredevil: Born Again Season 1 also introduced some mystical elements like the White Tiger's amulet, as the series is set in the MCU. Therefore, it is possible that the upcoming season may adapt the supernatural element as it is in the comics.
However, some fan theories are suggesting that the Shadowland elements of the second season might be a result of the fallout from Avengers: Doomsday. The New York seen in the second season might be a part of Victor Von Doom's Battleworld, which might be created after the destruction of the multiverse after Doomsday.
What will Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 be about?
Currently, we don't know the storyline for the upcoming season of Born Again, which is currently filming. But we do know the actors who are involved in this season. We do know that some of the new cast members of this season include Matthew Lillard in an undisclosed role, and Lili Taylor as an opponent to Wilson Fisk's rival in politics.
Other than that, not much is known about this season, but most probably the Daredevil: Born Again Season 2 might resolve the plotlines set up in the first season's finale. However, Sana Amanat, an executive producer in the show, hyped up the next season during an interview with Marvel by saying:
"It’s been great. We’ve been shooting a lot of crazy sequences. The crew is crushing it, and the action is nonstop. The backdrop is a little different. It’s still New York, but it’s a slightly different kind of New York. I’m very excited about the material we’ve been getting. I’ve been fangirling all week. We shot a really big sequence with Wilson Fisk this week, and I felt like a kid in a candy shop. [Laughs]."
Daredevil: Born Again is available to stream in its entirety on Disney+. Consider binging all nine episodes of the season as we wait for the second season.
