The movie Mickey 17 is getting a delayed release date as it is now planned to be released in IMAX resolution in theaters.
Mickey 17 is a science fiction black comedy movie which is based on the novel Mickey 7 written by Edward Ashton in 2022. The movie shows a fictional world where the protagonist Mickey Barnes who wishes to get out of Earth signs up to be an expendable, which is a disposable employee who gets cloned every time one of his versions dies.
As the story progresses, one of the protagonist’s versions Mickey 17 unintentionally survives a human expedition in the fictional ice world of Niflheim but finds out he was already cloned. Now he has to go head to head with his new clone Mickey 18 for a chance of survival. The movie is written and produced by Bong Joon-ho and was initially set to be released on March 29, 2024, but has been rescheduled to be released in 2025.
Why was Mickey 17’s release date moved?
According to the news portal Screen Rant, it was mentioned that Mickey’s primary release date was March 29, 2024, but after the SAG AFTRA strike, the production of the movie was delayed and the release date was pushed to January 31, 2025. Recently it is learnt through the news portal Empire that Bong Joon-ho’s directorial is getting a new release date.
It was revealed that Mickey 17 will now be getting an IMAX release on April 18, 2025. A spokesperson from Warner Bros expressed his joy while explaining to Empire that, “When the 18 April date became available, we quickly moved to secure it for Mikey 17," continuing, "We’re thrilled with the new date and very happy the film will be available to audiences in IMAX."

Yes, Mickey 17 is set to have a director’s cut in its release in 2025. During an interview between Empire and director Bong Joon-ho, the latter revealed how happy and respectful he felt towards the production house for allowing him to present his version of the movie to the audience. The director said, “The studio respected my final cut rights.”
Continuing to explain the production process, the director stated “Of course, during the editing process there are many opinions and many discussions that happen. But this film is my cut, and I’m very happy about it. It was a long process, but it was always smooth and respectful.”
