List of Christmas episodes in Modern Family

Modern Family is an American sitcom created by Christopher Lloyd and Steven Levitan, which aired on ABC from 2009 to 2020 for 11 seasons. The show follows the lives of the Pritchett-Dunphy-Tucker family, a diverse and modern extended family living in Los Angeles. These families are interconnected to each other through Jay Pritchett, the head of the family. The sitcom is in a mockumentary style and is known for its humor, diverse characters, and relatable family dynamics.

The show talks about contemporary issues such as same-sex marriage, parenting challenges, cultural differences, and generational gaps. Season 1, Episode 10- Undeck The Halls

The episode starts with the Dunphys video calling Phil’s father while wearing the Christmas sweaters he gifted them. Claire finds a cigarette burn on the couch, and Phil threatens the kids that he will cancel Christmas if no one confesses who did it. In Jay’s house, Gloria and Manny try to incorporate Colombian traditions into their Christmas celebration. Jay realizes they can celebrate Christmas with both American and Colombian traditions and brings firecrackers for them.

Cam and Mitchell take Lily for her first picture with Santa in the mall. They complain to the management that the man playing Santa doesn’t fit the part, and he gets fired. Feeling guilty that he was fired because of them, Cam and Mitchell invite him to dinner. Alex takes the blame for the burn and says that she was trying a cigarette for the first time and accidentally left a burn mark on the sofa. In the end, it is revealed that no one caused the burn. Phil apologizes to his kids and promises to take them to Italy.

Season 3, Episode 10- Express Christmas

The episode starts with the whole family relaxing by Jay and Gloria’s pool on a December afternoon. Soon, they all realize that they won’t be able to celebrate Christmas together this year because of their prior plans for Christmas. Phil comes up with the idea of Express Christmas and convinces everybody that they will be celebrating Christmas today since they are all free. They all start preparing for Christmas in pairs and divide duties. It leads to chaos as they all fail to complete their assigned tasks—the Christmas tree is ruined, the angel breaks, and the food is not prepared. Jay makes up for it by covering the house with fake snow, and everybody starts playing in it.

Season 5, Episode 10- The Old Man and The Tree

In this episode, Gloria’s mother Pilar visits her during Christmas. Gloria is going crazy spending time with her mother and wants some time away from her. She calls Claire to spend time with her mother and goes out. After coming back, Gloria is surprised to see her mother and Claire bonding so well.

In the meantime, Jay takes Manny to cut down a Christmas tree as he believes that the Christmas tree should be real. They find a perfect tree but struggle to cut it down. After many failed attempts, they finally manage to cut down the tree. Meanwhile, Phil tries to achieve his goal of walking a distance equivalent to that of Canada on the elliptical machine he bought last Christmas. If he fails to achieve his goal, he will have to move his machine to the garage.

Season 7, Episode 9- White Christmas

In the episode, Gloria rents a cabin in the mountains for Christmas. She plans this white Christmas getaway for the whole family, as it will be her first Christmas since becoming an American citizen. However, when they arrive, they realize that the weather is too hot, and an unknown lady is already there because of some confusion as her family forgot to tell her about their plan. It turns out that she is a renowned scientist and Alex admired her work.

Their holiday was filled with chaos. Cam and Mitchell decide to make up for their bad performance last year, as Mitchell was unable to sing because he was drunk. They practice a lot but end up not singing the song, as Alex and Fig perform the song they were practicing. Meanwhile, Jay makes a big announcement that he is going to retire and hand over the company to Claire.

Season 10, Episode 10- Stuck in a Moment

In this episode, Haley and Dylan were planning to tell her family about her pregnancy but they were waiting for the right moment for it. Alex knew about the pregnancy but couldn’t tell anyone about it as Haley asked her to keep it a secret. Alex is suffering physically because of the secret and begs Haley and Dylan to reveal the news soon. In the meantime, Gloria receives a package from her cousin in Colombia. The package contained a spider, which caused a spider infestation in their house, and so they had to celebrate Christmas at Claire’s house. Haley and Dylan finally announced their pregnancy to the family at Christmas dinner. At first, everyone is shocked, but they soon become happy about the news, and they all take a Christmas picture.

Season 11, Episode 9- The Last Christmas

In the episode, Cam and Mitchell host a Christmas dinner for their entire family. Cam makes a seating arrangement, but it fails as nobody wants to sit in their assigned seat. Manny was upset with Luke as he was dating Sherry, Gloria didn’t want to sit next to Phil as she was planning to work with another realtor company, and Claire was avoiding Jay as he wanted her to work at his dog bed company. At dinner, everyone was still angry with each other when Cam confessed that he was interviewing for the head coach position at the University of North Central Missouri. Everyone realizes that this will be their last Christmas together, so they resolve their issues and enjoy the dinner.
