Televised soaps will be getting a run for their money in this year's Daytime Emmy Awards. Obviously, the four remaining televised soaps -- The Young and the Restless, The Bold and the Beautiful, Days of our Lives, and General Hospital -- are all eligible for Daytime Emmys.
But a ruling by the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) means the televised soaps won't be alone. All My Children and One Life to Live, which Prospect Park aired online in 2013, will be eligible to compete in all the soap categories of this year's awards.
The time period to submit nominations for this year's Daytime Emmys has concluded, and it's looking like this year's ceremony will be one of the most competitive in recent years.
David Michaels, senior executive director of NATAS, told TV Guide Magazine, "From the look of Prospect Park's submissions, I think they'll give the four network soaps a real run for their money when it comes to production values and the quality of the writing, directing, and acting."
This may be the last chance for All My Children and One Life to Live to vie for awards. After a troubled first season behind the scenes, multiple sources indicated that Prospect Park would not be bringing the shows back for a second season anytime soon.
There has not yet been an announcement about when or where the 41st Annual Daytime Emmys will be broadcast. HLN, which has broadcast the ceremony for the past two years, has bowed out for 2014.
"Shows like [the Daytime Emmys] need commitments in advance to plan and I don't think we can make that commitment," Albie Hecht, HLN's vice president and general manager, told Soaps In Depth.
A broadcast partner is expected to be announced this spring. The pre-nominations for this year's Daytime Emmys will be released March 3. The final nominations will follow on May 1.
