Brytni Sarpy on the next phase of Devon and Elena's relationship (children?) on The Young and the Restless

The Young and the Restless' Brytni Sarpy opens up about how an adoption scenario would bring Elena and Devon closer together and possibly mirror the characters' own child/parent histories.

With The Young and the Restless possibly restarting production later this month, it might not be long until fans start seeing new material on their screens. And when that happens, actress Brytni Sarpy (Elena Dawson) has a few thoughts on what she'd like to see happen for her Genoa City alter ego -- including more medical storylines and a possible foster/adoption scenario.

In a recent issue of Soap Opera Digest, Sarpy shares that she's thrilled about her character beginning to work at the free clinic and hopes that the writers continue down that path.

"I always wanted Elena to have scenes at the hospital, and the free clinic is even better because she has an emotional investment there," she says. "Elena has a habit of getting deeply invested in other people's problems, so it would be interesting to see her learn a lesson from being too involved with certain patients she feels badly for."

Part of the appeal of the free clinic storyline is its potential to lead to other situations that could mirror Elena's history as well as that of her boyfriend, Devon (Bryton James).

"With Jared [Michael Maclane] now working under Elena and Nate [Sean Dominic] at the clinic, I would love Elena to be more of a mentor or mother figure for Jared, a relationship that could possibly blossom into a foster/adoption scenario," she shares. "I think this could make for a good reminder and repeat of some of the issues Devon faced when he was first adopted by Neil [Kristoff St. John] and Dru [Victoria Rowell] as a teenager."

But that's not all. Sarpy says that delving deeper into a connection with Jared could also lead Elena and Devon on a journey toward starting their own family.

"Having Devon and Elena deal with parenting issues would also give them a place to grow and learn about each other better, and prepare them for having a baby," she opines. "Themes of parenting with Jared could also allow Elena to address some of her own issues with her parents and her father not being around."

Of course, before Elena and Devon -- Elevon, as fans affectionately call the couple -- start talking about having a baby, they should probably make sure they're on solid ground. After all, there's still a chance that Devon will fall for Amanda (Mishael Morgan), who's a dead ringer for his deceased wife, Hilary. In an interview with TV Insider, Bryton James says there's still the possibility that Y&R's writers will explore a love triangle between his alter ego, Elena, and Amanda.

"There's love for Devon with both of those characters/actresses. Mishael and I have talked about how they're going to make a connection between Amanda and Hilary -- if there is one," he muses, adding that if the writers go down that path, it'll be his first on-screen love triangle with two women. "I've been in one on-screen with Mishael and Kristoff, but there hasn't been one like this. I think it'll be positive. There's a fan base for both."
