God is a fictional character in the American fantasy horror series Supernatural. He is portrayed by Rob Benedict, Keith Szarabajka and Luvia Petersen in the series.

God, also referred to as Gaia, Yahweh, Christo, and many other names, including his alter ego "Chuck Shurley,” is one of the two main antagonists, along with Lucifer. He first appears as a supporting character in Seasons 4 and 5, then as the main protagonist in Season 11, and the ultimate antagonist in Season 14. He is Sam and Dean Winchester's bitterest enemy.

God in Supernatural

In the series, God is an ancient deity who created the Universe and almost everything it contains, including the human soul. The only entity that is more powerful than him is his twin sister Amara, and before his death, Death was as powerful as him. God and darkness work together to maintain the universe's balance since light cannot exist without darkness and vice versa. Existence itself would come to an end if any of them were destroyed or lost.

God’s background in Supernatural

God and his sister, the Darkness, were created at the beginning. God made multiple worlds to demonstrate to her that there could be more than the two of them, but the Darkness would always wipe them out. God's earliest and most powerful creation, the only creation to precede Creation and the Universe, and his only primordial creations were the archangels Michael, Lucifer, Raphael, and Gabriel, who were created long before the Universe, Creation, and time itself.

He repelled the Darkness with the help of the archangels. God deceived her and locked her away with the Mark of Cain as her lock and key because the five of them together could hardly defeat her. He entrusted Lucifer, his most trusted lieutenant and favored son, with guarding the Mark. Because Light and Dark must coexist in order to preserve the fabric of reality, he locked her up rather than kill her because he realized she needed to be with him.

Death, the Pale Horseman, also appeared at some point, but neither Death nor God can recall who appeared first. God had created the earliest and most powerful creatures, the Leviathans, sometime after the war, but he recognized that they would pose a threat to his other creations, so he imprisoned them in Purgatory, a monstrous world. He and his archangels lived in Heaven, which he created. He went on to establish the classes of angels known as Cherubim, Rit Zien, Grigori, Seraphim, and regular Angels. After that, he chose Metatron to write his words on different tablets.

Lucifer claimed that the Earth was "the last perfect handiwork of God" but that it was soon followed by the creation of humans. Metatron claims that Gadreel was specially chosen by God to guard his prized creations in the Garden of Eden. He then urged all of the angels to show more empathy for people than for himself by bowing down to them. God was eventually enraged by humanity's admiration of natural elements rather than himself, so he created the Deities to make them shoulder the responsibility and because they made for entertaining stories. However, God eventually abandoned them because of his ego.

Lucifer defied his command and revolted. God expelled him from Heaven because he became rebellious. Lucifer persisted, though, and transformed Lilith's human soul into the first demon by corrupting and twisting it. After he produced several more, God punished him by ordering Michael to cast Lucifer and the demons into Hell, where they would be imprisoned in a cage that would be impossible for the fallen archangel to escape from without the 66 Seals, the Horsemen's rings, or a potent spell that would enable him to control a vessel.

The Hellhounds, whom God had originally intended to be his closest companions, were judged too violent at some point, and God killed all but Ramsey, who was saved by Lucifer. Eventually, God also imprisoned the Shedim, who were said to be incredibly nasty and dark creatures, in a different area of Hell that only a very strong Nephilim could enter. It was said that the Shedim would exterminate the Nephilim the first time they set foot on Earth.

God was so disappointed in his creatures that he left Heaven and had Gadreel imprisoned in the jail there for failing to protect the Garden. To live in peace on earth, God adopted the name Chuck Shurley and concealed himself from his children, but he continued to communicate with his son and Joshua, the gardener in heaven. To gain a front-row seat to events, God pretended to be a prophet, concealed his power from everyone, and assumed the persona of Chuck Shurley.
