The Last of Us Season 2 had its premiere on April 13, 2025. Right after the premiere of that episode, HBO released a trailer teasing what fans can expect from the upcoming episodes of the current season. This season introduces a new calm, as five years have passed since the first season's finale, and Joel and Ellie have settled down in Jackson along with Tommy and Maria, Joel's family.
Jackson, like in Season 1, is an idyllic, quaint town that has built a thriving community in the five years. However, this idyllic settlement will be threatened by the horde of infected this season. Furthermore, there is also the threat of the cordyceps vines growing inside the pipes. Thus, the stakes are personally high for the main characters this season, and it looks like they will continue to only grow further after that.
The Last of Us Season 2 teases an invasion by the infected:
Midway through "Future Days," The Last of Us Season 2 premiere, we come across an infected walker who thinks strategically. This is in contrast to the infected people in the previous season, who, like zombies, wandered aimlessly only to be shot by the main characters. However, this season teases an evolution where the walker was smart enough to lure Ellie into a trap.
Therefore, smarter infected people and the cordyceps vines in the pipes are a threat to Jackson on two different fronts. The latter storyline is an interesting change to the world of The Last of Us, as it is not from the games. The changes made to the series were something showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann addressed in an interview with Variety on March 5, 2025. Druckmann said this:
“I love the changes that we’ve made. It’s a different version of that story, but its DNA is in there. Maybe more than excited, I’m really curious what their reaction will be.”
As we already know, the second season is not going to completely adapt The Last of Us Part II. Thus, the Variety journalist asked the showrunners about the number of seasons that we could expect from this HBO series. To this question, Craig Mazin responded:
“It feels like we’ve got one or two more seasons. It’s getting harder to make, because every episode gets big. You don’t want to wait four years for a 17-episode finish, or whatever it is.”
This is similar to the comments made by HBO executive Francesca Orsi to Deadline at The White Lotus Season 3 premiere. Her exact comments were:
“We don’t have a complete or final plan, but I think it’s looking like four seasons. I wouldn’t want to confirm that, but it’s looking like this season and then two more seasons after this and we’re done.”
The second season of The Last of Us will return next Sunday on HBO and Max.
