The Office is an American television series inspired by the British television comedy show of the same name. The series' format is a parody of the fly-on-the-wall documentary technique, which combines traditional situation comedy segments with fictional interviews with the characters.


The show ran for nine seasons, totaling 201 episodes, from March 24, 2005, to May 16, 2013. Throughout its run, the ensemble cast had several changes. The program received six straight nominations for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series between 2006 and 2011, and it won for the second season. The Office was among one of the top 100 television programs of all time by Rolling Stone in 2016.


The program was also nominated for three Golden Globes for Best Television Series – Comedy or Musical; it won one of the five Producers Guild of America Awards for Best Episodic Comedy; it won the 2006 TCA Award for Program of the Year; and it won two of the four TCA Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Comedy. The Office received a Peabody Award in 2007 and was rated by the American Film Institute as one of the best television shows of 2006 and 2008.

The American actor and comedian Steve Carell portrays Michael Scott, regional manager of the Scranton, Pennsylvania branch of Dunder Mifflin, a paper company. He is shown as a boss who is generally inadequate, unproductive, and unprofessional, yet he is also shown to be kind and to be effective at work at certain essential times.


Steve Carell is best known for his role as Michael Scott in The Office, in which he also worked as a producer, executive producer, writer, and director at times. In addition to his many honors, Carell won a Golden Globe for The Office. He was named "America's Funniest Man" by Life magazine. Carell didn’t appear in the eighth season of the series and returned as a guest cast in the final season.

The American actor Rainn Wilson portrays Dwight Schrute, a salesman and assistant to Michael Scott, at the fictional paper distribution company Dunder Mifflin before he was promoted. He also owns a beet plantation, operates a bed and breakfast at Schrute Farms, and in Season 7 takes over the business park where Dunder Mifflin is situated. Dwight is the only character to have both dialogue and appearances in every episode of the show.

The American actor and filmmaker John Krasinski portrays Jim Halpert in the series. He begins as a sales representative at the Dunder Mifflin paper distribution company's Scranton location before moving temporarily to the Stamford location in the third season. After the Scranton and Stamford branches merge, he is promoted to Assistant Regional Manager and eventually co-manager with Michael Scott.


American actor and filmmaker John Burke Krasinski is best known for playing Jim Halpert on the NBC sitcom The Office, which he produced and occasionally directed from 2005 to 2013. Time named him one of the 100 most influential people in the world for his work directing, co-writing, and co-starring in the 2018 horror movie A Quiet Place. The American actor B.J. Novak portrays Ryan Howard in the series. He appears in seasons 1–8 as a major character and in season 9 as a guest. His character is based on the character Ricky Howard from the original British version of The Office, and Neil Godwin during the fourth season.

The American actor and comedian Ed Helms portrays Andy Bernard in the series. He appeared as the main cast in the series from seasons 6-9.


Actor and comedian Edward Parker Helms worked as a correspondent on Comedy Central's The Daily Show with Jon Stewart from 2002 to 2006. He portrayed Stuart "Stu" Price in The Hangover trilogy and Andy Bernard, a paper salesman, in the NBC sitcom The Office (2006–2013). The American actor James Spader portrays Robert California in the series. Robert convinced Jo Bennett to replace her as CEO in the eighth season. Following David Wallace's purchase of Dunder Mifflin, Robert leaves the company in the eighth-season finale. California is an original character that didn't appear in the first British version of the show. He appeared as a main character in the eighth season of the show.
