American actress Natalie Hershlag, better known by her stage name Natalie Portman, was born in Israel. Since she was a teenager, she has had a busy career in cinema, appearing in both independent and popular movies and winning numerous awards, including two Golden Globes and an Academy Award.
Playing the child hitman's protégé in the action film Leon: The Professional (1994), Portman made her acting debut at the age of twelve. She debuted on Broadway in a 1998 performance of "The Diary of a Young Girl" while still a high school student. She gained international recognition for her portrayal of Padmé Amidala in Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999).
Portman studied psychology at Harvard University from 1999 to 2003, earning a bachelor's degree. Although she played fewer roles during this time, she nonetheless appeared in the 2001 revival of Anton Chekhov's play The Seagull by The Public Theater and the Star Wars prequel trilogy in 2002 and 2005.
