Days of our Lives has officially been renewed for a 54th season, meaning there's plenty more drama on the docket at the NBC soap.

Days of our Lives has been on one heck of an upswing the last year, and the hard work the cast and crew have put in to bring viewers the best material possible has paid off: NBC has chosen to renew the soap opera for another year.

"We're very excited about having more great DAYS in Salem," said Bruce Evans, NBC executive vice president, current programming, via a statement released to Deadline. "[Executive producer] Ken Corday and his team continue to tell stories with which the DAYS loyal audience feels a deep connection. We congratulate them on their remarkable daytime legacy and look forward to what they have planned for the new season."

Corday also made a statement about the renewal of the soap opera that his parents, Ted and Betty Corday, created 53 years ago.

"We're thrilled that the sands will continue flowing through the hourglass for yet another year," he said. "We are most grateful to NBC and Sony for their continued support of Days of our Lives. Buckle up, because we have some exciting and compelling new stories coming to Salem this season."

After years of having seen better, ahem, DAYS, the NBC soap opera has been making great ratings inroads. In fact, the most recent ratings report shows that DAYS isn't too far away from dethroning General Hospital as the nation's third most-watched soap opera. The improved numbers are being credited to the show's new head writer, Ron Carlivati, who has brought back several fan favorite characters and is bringing the soap's history alive in a modern way.

"So does this mean I have to keep writing?" Carlivati joked when news of the soap's renewal broke. Fans were quick to express their jubilance over the news -- and to tell Carlivati that they were glad he would "have to" keep writing.

Lauren Koslow (Kate Roberts) was also quick to respond to the renewal news. "Great news for DAYS tweeties!" she wrote.

Producer Greg Meng also shared the news, writing: "We're doing somersaults in Salem! It's a great day thanks to #NBC and #Sony... and our fans for their faithful support!"
