The world was unintentionally opened in the human experimentation lab near Hawkins. This is the reason behind the mysteries, strange paranormal occurrences, and the disappearance of certain townspeople. In season 4, it is confirmed that Eleven, while battling Vecna, the main villain of the story, is the one who opened or certainly created this realm of the Upside Down using her psychic abilities when trying to stop Vecna. Unfortunately, this only started the state of the things that began haunting the town of Hawkins.
