In season 4, Max was still struggling with the death of her brother Billy. She was having nightmares about the moment of his death. After being away from her friends for some time, she decides to help them in investigating Chrissy’s death. In the process, she realizes that she is experiencing the same hallucinations and symptoms as Chrissy. She became the main victim of Vecna in season 4.


Max and her friends make a plan to kill Vecna. Max was to become bait and distract Vecna while the others attacked his real body in the Upside Down. But Eleven’s powers were not enough to defeat Vecna, as he overpowered her. Vecna manipulated Max's mind and used her pain to put her into a trance and try to kill her. He brutally attacks her by breaking her limbs and blinding her.


Max initially survives the attack and breaks down in Lucas’s arm, begging, as she is not ready to die. She went still and her heart stopped working for a moment. However, Eleven uses her abilities to save her and is able to restart her heart. In the last scene, she is shown in a hospital bed, in a coma. The ending left many viewers wondering what would happen with Max in season 5 and whether she would wake up from the coma.

Maxine Mayfield, also known as Max, was introduced in season 2, episode 1, titled “Chapter One: MADMAX”. Sadie Sink plays the role of Max. Her family moved to the small town of Hawkins from California because her mother remarried Neil Hargrove. Billy Hargrove was her stepbrother. After moving to Hawkins, she quickly became an important member of the main group. She is portrayed as an independent and strong person with a complex family background. She loved skateboarding and was the tomboy of the group.


In season 3, Max and Lucas started dating and had an on-and-off relationship throughout the show. Eventually, she breaks up with him at the beginning of season 4. She faced many difficulties in the show. She suffered from PTSD because of her brother’s death in season 4. She played an essential part in fighting the supernatural powers attacking the town of Hawkins. At the end of season 4, Vecna manipulates Max’s mind and nearly kills her by breaking her limbs and blinding her. However, Eleven saves her and brings her back to life. In the season 4 finale, she is seen in a hospital, still in a coma.
