Dateline: Deadly Intent followed the case of Larry and Connie Hoagland, as the former attempted to murder his wife but was unsuccessful. The unfortunate incident occurred in 2010, and Larry was eventually arrested by the police and imprisoned.

While the Hoaglands seemed like a happy family at first glance, deeper investigations revealed their financial troubles as well as Larry's affair. He attempted to kill his wife twice and almost succeeded the second time, but Connie survived after undergoing multiple surgeries.

Let us now explore in detail what Larry Hoagland did, as shown in Dateline.

Larry Hoagland was a San Diego photographer

Larry and Connie Hoagland married in their 20s and had three children before Larry attempted to murder Connie. As the couple began to struggle financially, Larry claimed he would be going out of town for extra work. Naturally, Connie saw no reason to suspect him when he said this and believed that her husband was genuinely working hard to provide for the family.

However, Larry was blatantly lying to Connie when he claimed he was going out of town for work. The owner of a large photography studio in San Diego, Larry left town to meet his mistress, Lee Ann Rupert, who also happened to be his high school love. He intended to reconcile with her but did not inform her of his plan to kill his wife.

Larry's computer search history gave him away

While the police investigated the truck explosion that nearly killed Connie, a call from Larry's business partner ultimately helped them crack the case. The partner was concerned when he found Larry's search history on their shared work computer, as most of those searches involved the steps for making a bomb.

Larry was arrested within a few days after the explosion and eventually convicted of attempted murder and other charges. He received a life sentence, along with an additional 13 years in prison.

After being taken into custody, Larry called from the prison, and while he did not admit to making plans to kill Connie, he confessed something else to her, as Connie told ABC 20/20.

“He said, 'Hi Connie, I just wanted to let you know, because it's going to get out, that I've been having an affair," she said. "Then he said, 'But I'm dedicated to you ever since Thursday, and that was the day of the bombing.”

Following Larry's sentence, Connie said,

“I don't want to think about him anymore. I just am done with that. I had to forgive him.”

Connie had to undergo serious operations, and a rod had to be inserted in her right leg for her to recover fully from the bomb attack that Larry executed. He had fit the pipe bomb in Connie's truck, and as soon as she turned it on, it led to a massive blast, resulting in Connie lying in a pool of blood, screaming in pain.
