The American television reality competition show Big Brother is based on the Dutch reality show of the same name. It was developed by producer John de Mol Jr. in 1997. It takes its name from the character in George Orwell's 1949 novel Nineteen Eighty-Four.
The show's core concept is similar to past variations, where a group of individuals, referred to as "House Guests," live together in a specially built home that is cut off from the "Outside World" in exchange for a $750,000 cash prize ($500,000 as of season 23). Live television cameras and personal audio microphones are used to continuously monitor the residence while guests are staying there. During the competition, HouseGuests are eliminated by being voted out.
Since the Spanish version of the Big Brother franchise was discontinued in 2022, the American series, which debuted on CBS on July 5, 2000, has been the most successful adaptation. The show premiered its 26th season on July 17, 2024, and its 27th season is scheduled to debut in the summer of 2025.
