In a previous conversation in 2024, while Cobra Kai was still airing new episodes, with The Hollywood Reporter, the showrunner and executive producers Jo Hurwitz, Josh Heald, and Hayden Schlossberg revealed that they would be interested in exploring a prequel to the Karate Kid timeline and portray Mr. Miyagi's tale of origin. Schlossberg explained that it is an idea they would consider exploring after the series comes to an end.

"I would say that we definitely want to do that and have been talking about that. But the focus has been on Cobra Kai. As we’re finishing that up, "we’ll see exactly what path we take in terms of spinoffs, but it is definitely something that we’ve been wanting to do. It’s just that we want to wait until we get finished with Cobra Kai first before we get into that."

Recently, conversing with The Direct at Paleyfest, Jon Hurwitz offered some more insight into the possibility of the expansion of this martial arts franchise. When questioned regarding a dream spin-off idea and the characters who had the potential to lead those spin-offs, Hurwitz replied that there were many choices.

Hurwitz explained that the spin-off ideas depend on the networks, Sony and Netflix, and what fits with their timing and direction. He acknowledged the Mr. Miyagi spin-off that the audience has been speculating about and how it remains to be seen if the timing is right for the project.

"I mean, we have a buffet in front of us in terms of what we'd like to do, and it just has to line up with what our partners at Sony and Netflix want to do. There are contemporary spin-offs that take place after the events of Cobra Kai. "
"There are other spin-offs that, you know, we know the audience has been speculating about that took place 100 years ago. We'll have to see, you know, and everything in between. We'll have to see which one is the right time and the right project. But hopefully, there's more to share soon."

The Karate Kid franchise is already expanding with the upcoming feature film, and it appears from the creator's comments that there might be much more on the way for fans of this martial arts universe.
