Emilia Pérez by Jacques Audiard
Jacques Audiard is the writer and director of the 2024 musical criminal comedy Emilia Pérez. Inspired by Audiard's titular opera libretto, which was based on Boris Razon's 2018 novel Écoute, the movie centers on a Mexican cartel boss (Karla Sofía Gascón) who hires a lawyer (Zoe Saldaña) to assist her in disappearing so she can change into a woman. Mark Ivanir, Édgar Ramírez, Adriana Paz, and Selena Gomez also play prominent roles in the movie. The film was co-produced internationally by Belgium, Mexico, and France.
The movie took home the Best Film European Film Award. Among the top 13 nominations for the 97th Academy Awards were Best Picture and Best Actress (Gascón, the first openly trans woman to receive a nod in the category). It received four Golden Globes, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, out of ten nominations. The film has received the most nominations for a non-English movie at both events.
