Julie Berman launches socially conscious pet web site

General Hospital's Emmy-winning pet lover, Julie Berman, has co-founded a company designed to provide pet owners with eco-friendly options for their companions.

Julie Berman (Lulu Spencer) isn't just an Emmy-winning actress. Berman is also a pet lover -- and she's used her celebrity and love of animals to help found Better Buddies, Inc.

Better Buddies is a company with a focus on offering consumers top-notch pet products that are built using eco-friendly materials and practices. The company also wants to put emphasis on encouraging potential pet owners to first consider adoption as a means to find a family pet. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, or ASPCA, estimates that approximately 6 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year. Of those, about half -- or 60% of dogs and 70% of cats -- are euthanized.

Since some animals have special needs that makes it hard for them to find a shelter or a permanent home. Better Buddies donates a portion of its sales to Best Friends Animal Society, which has helped to create a sanctuary that provides state-of-the-art veterninary care for homeless pets.

On its website, located at betterbuddies.com, Better Buddies currently offers an assortment of pet beds for purchase. The beds are made from hemp, a natural fiber that gets softer with use, and its porous nature keeps pets cool in warm weather and warm in cooler weather.
