General Hospital's Rena Sofer mourns a heartbreaking loss

General Hospital's Rena Sofer took to social media to honor someone who meant the world to her family for years.

Rena Sofer, who left The Bold and the Beautiful last year before bringing the character of Lois Cerullo back to General Hospital and its fictional town of Port Charles, is heartbroken over the loss of Alfie, a dog who has been a part of her family for the last seven years.

"I have too much to say. But I have no words right now. It's all just so much pain. Yesterday was the most devastating yet expected day. But it was too soon. I only had my boy for 7 years and 8 days. Cancer stole him from me, from Sandy, from Avalon and from his sister Mega," Sofer wrote. "From everyone who knew and loved him. I love all my dogs... but without remorse...Alfie was my favorite. My heart and soul dog. I am destroyed and numb. The greatest gift we gave each other was each other. I will miss you forever and ever and ever."

The post was accompanied by photos of Alfie, as well as a heartbreaking video of a tear-filled Sofer kissing her pet goodbye.

An avid pet lover, Sofer encourages adopting and fostering dogs rather than buying them from a breeder. The mother of two daughters, Rosabel and Avalon, Sofer has said that she thinks of her dogs as her other kids.

"My children tease me that I possibly love my dogs more than them," she once told Soaps In Depth. "They've never seen me love animals the way I connected to these dogs. I'm usually not that mushy-gushy person, but I became that person who takes pictures of my dogs constantly and buys them all sorts of stuff. They are like my children."

Condolences from co-stars began pouring in after Sofer posted her goodbye, including messages from Michelle Stafford (Phyllis Summers, The Young and the Restless), Laura Wright (Carly Corinthos, GH), Linsey Godfrey (Sarah Horton, Days of our Lives, ex-Caroline Spencer, B&B), and Ashley Jones (Bridget Forrester, B&B).

Sofer joined B&B in 2013, at which point she had already established herself as a daytime favorite. Her first soap role was the short-lived 1987 character Joyce Abernathy on Another World, which she followed up with the role of Rocky McKenzie on Loving from 1988 to 1991. Sofer then went on to star as General Hospital's Lois Cerullo from 1993 to 1997. In September 2023, ABC announced that Sofer would be rejoining GH.
