That Christmas Production
It was revealed in November 2019 that Locksmith Animation was working on an animated feature picture called The Empty Stocking, which was based on British director Richard Curtis's trilogy of children's Christmas books, That Christmas and Other Stories. Retitled That Christmas, Locksmith revealed in June 2021 that Simon Otto will be directing the movie, his first time directing a motion picture.
After working together on Locksmith's first animated feature film, Ron's Gone Wrong (2021), Locksmith stated in May 2022 that it had given DNEG Animation the digital production of the movie. The first look at That Christmas was released in June 2022. The film's cast, which includes Brian Cox, Fiona Shaw, Jodie Whittaker, and Bill Nighy, was revealed on March 20, 2024.
That Christmas premiere and release and date
That Christmas debuted on October 19, 2024, at the BFI London Film Festival, and on December 4, 2024, it was made available on Netflix. Before Disney acquired the company in 2019, the movie was scheduled for a theatrical release by 20th Century Fox under a contract with Locksmith Animation. However, in June 2022, Netflix acquired the global distribution rights to release the movie online under the Netflix Animation label.

Music in That Christmas
It was revealed in November 2023 that John Powell, a partner with DreamWorks Animation and Blue Sky Studios, will write the musical soundtrack for the movie. It was made public in August 2024 that Ed Sheeran, an English singer-songwriter, will compose and help write the song "Under the Tree" for the movie.
On November 26, 2024, Sheeran's song was released as a digital single. On December 4, 2024, a digital version of a different record including John Powell's score was released.
