Award-winning chef Carmy Berzatto, a native of Chicago, quits the world of fine dining to take over his family's restaurant after his older brother Mikey commits suicide. He eventually closes the restaurant to create a new one, even though his attempts to revive it usually prove successful.

Carmy, the youngest of three children, was raised in Chicago's River North area alongside his parents, two brothers, and a large family network, many of whom worked in shady occupations. His mother's mental health problems and his father's lack of interest caused a tense connection between them. In their chaotic and emotionally abusive home, he and his brothers grew up quickly and developed a close bond.

Carmy was an awkward child who was quiet, uncoordinated, and stuttering. As the family's baby, he relied heavily on his extroverted and cheerful older brother, Michael, for social and emotional support. Together, they enjoyed cooking, which Carmy particularly loved. When they grew up, the two of them hoped to create a restaurant together, which they would call "The Bear".

Carmy wanted to work at the family restaurant that their father had opened, The Original Beef of Chicagoland, but his older brother Mikey refused to let him. Carmy decided to defy his brother and become the greatest chef he could. Before relocating to New York, where he eventually rose to the position of sous chef at a three-star restaurant. He staged in Copenhagen and attended culinary school in Paris.

He realized that he was truly gifted and had discovered his calling in life. Due to his rapid climb to fame, he has gradually moved past his awkward childhood self and into his own. He neglected Mikey and their sister Natalie while he was away, concentrating instead on his developing career.

At the age of 21, he finally took home the Best Up and Coming Chef award and started to be recognized for his hard work. Deeply creative, he possesses a unique and natural aptitude for his line of work, which has brought him international renown and a reputation at an early age. He is also credited with keeping his restaurant's three stars.

But when he learned that Mikey committed suicide himself and left him the restaurant in his will, everything changed. Carmy is adrift and much of his growth has been destroyed by this setback. In order to manage his brother's business and reunite with his surviving family, Carmy packed up and departed New York.
