The Golden Globes are given out for excellence in international television and film. Since 1944, it has been an annual award event that honors artists and their work. Typically taking place in January, the ceremony has been an essential part of the film industry's awards season, which concludes annually with the Academy Awards. The time frame for Golden Globe eligibility is January 1 through December 31.

The Golden Globe Foundation, which represents foreign journalists who cover the American entertainment industry, currently organizes the Golden Globes. The Golden Globe Foundation uses the money raised from the event to support scholarships and organizations in the entertainment industry, like the Young Artist Awards.

Foreign journalists living in Los Angeles established the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) in 1943 as the Hollywood Foreign Correspondent Association (HFCA) in an effort to provide a more structured method of gathering and distributing movie news to markets outside of the United States.

The establishment of an Academy Award-style ceremony to recognize film accomplishments was one of the organization's first significant initiatives. The first Golden Globe Awards, which recognized the greatest accomplishments in 1943 cinema, took place at the 20th Century Fox studios in January 1944. Later, ceremonies were held at a number of locations over the course of the following ten years, such as the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel and the Beverly Hills Hotel.
