The film is based on the 1981 Connecticut murder case of Arne Cheyenne Johnson and Gerald Brittle's book The Devil in Connecticut, which also covers the trial.
The film's initial release date of September 2020 was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was released in the United States on June 4, 2021, by Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema. At the same time, the movie was made available for one month on HBO Max.
