Movies are a work of Art, and great artists know how to incorporate mistakes brilliantly into the end product. A lot of iconic moments created in cinema often come through the unscripted inputs of either the directors or the actors. These spontaneous scenes, most of the time have succeeded in creating a memorable scene that is loved by the audience.

20) Glass Smashing Scene in Django Unchained

Django Unchained movie features a scene with Leonardo Dicaprio where he is speaking and bangs his hand on the table. Unexpectedly, he ends up smashing the glass on the table which cuts his hand. But, DiCaprio being the brilliant actor that he is, remained in character and continued with his monologue. This unscripted moment of him giving a monologue with blood dripping out of his wounded hand created an intense atmosphere that rightly resonated with the mood of the scene.

The film Blade Runner is also credited with providing cinema with one of the most iconic dialogues. In the death scene of Roy Batty, he delivers a very emotional and vulnerable scene and while reciting the speech, he deters a bit from the script and ends up adding to his speech the iconic line - “All those moments will be lost in time, like tears in rain.” This beautiful addition made his character more striking and memorable for the audience.

Robin Williams was renowned for his ability to improvise and bring depth to his characters by occasionally deviating from the script, creating moments of cinematic brilliance. One such shift happened in the movie Good Will Hunting. In the movie, Robin Williams portrays - Sean Maguire, a psychologist who is counseling Will Hunting(played by Matt Damon). In order to help Will Hunting recover, Sean tells him the story of his wife. It was later revealed that this humorous scene was completely added by Robin Williams on the spot.

The Joker portrayed by Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight is one of the most twisted characters in the history of cinema. While the script in itself was a masterpiece, actor Heath Ledger embodied the character of Joker so well that any little tweak he provided in the scenes seemed to come as if from the Joker himself. One such unscripted moment was while Joker was imprisoned he starts slow clapping in a sarcastic manner. This scene, improvised by Heath Ledger, gave the character of Joker the sinister twisted power it needed.

16) Gun vs. Knife Fight in Raiders of the Lost Ark

The movie, Indiana Jones: Raider of the Lost Ark, has a scene that requires a fight sequence between a swordsman and Indiana Jones. Initially, the fight was supposed to be elaborate, with a lot of flashy moves and stunts but on the day of filming actor Harrison Ford who plays Indiana Jones was unwell. He couldn’t have performed the scripted stunts.

So, Harrison Ford suggested a slight input into the scene which elevated the quality of the entire movie. He suggested that while the swordsman exhibits his moves, Indiana Jones simply takes out his gun and shoots him.

This brilliant idea added humor to the movie and indeed is an example of an unscripted scene that proved to be better than the scripted one.

15) 'Am I not merciful' in Gladiator

Gladiator is a cinematic masterpiece, elevated not only by its epic storyline and direction but also by a truly exceptional cast. Each actor brought their character to life with such dedication and determination that it helped propel the film to the iconic status it enjoys today. Actor Joaquin Phoenix has given one of the greatest unscripted performances in the movie. In a scene involving a confrontation between him and his sister, he shifts from the script and shouts at her in a chilling manner, the lines “Am I not merciful?”.

The precision and passion with which he delivers his line leaves the audience with goosebumps.

Tom Hanks' portrayal of Forest Gump is nothing short of brilliant. He embodied the simplicity and emotional vulnerability of his character very profoundly. One scene that portrays how excellently Tom Hanks understood his character is when he introduces himself to a stranger on the bus. Deviating from the script, Tom Hank goes on to say “My name is Forrest Gump. People call me Forrest Gump.”

This change is so small but highly significant to the character of Forrest Gump.

Anthony Hopkins in Silence of the Lambs, provided an input that infused the movie with the much-needed creepy energy. In order to cleverly portray the predator-like tendencies of his character, Hopkins took it upon himself to be creative and come up with eerie, hissing-like noises that make the audience’s toes curl. It is because of this addition of his, that his character today is considered such a masterpiece.

Thor: Ragnarok showcases the bonding between Thor and Loki. The actors Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston developed a bond during the filming of the movie and this bonding is what nudged them to go off the script and provide us with a humorous and wholesome scene.

In the memorable moment, the brothers find themselves on the chaotic planet Sakaar, plotting their escape. Thor pretends to be injured, while Loki creates a distraction, allowing them both to flee. The unplanned scene succeeded in giving a brilliant insight into the bond between the two brothers.

One of the most memorable moments, however, is a line of dialogue that was completely unscripted. The scene involved Clemenza with his subordinate, carrying out a murder. The movie Dumb and Dumber involves a scene where the main characters - Harry and Lloyd are driving a hitchhiker and in order to annoy him, actor Jim Carrey, goes off the script and says the unexpected but hilarious line “Wanna hear the most annoying sound of the world?”

He then continues to take out annoying high-pitched noises. In a movie full of outrageous humor, this unscripted moment stands out as one of the funniest and most enduring gags, earning it a permanent spot in the comedy canon.

Actor Tom Felton who portrays Draco Malfoy in the movie - Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is known for forgetting his lines. It was one of these mistakes that succeeded in giving the movie an iconic line.

Draco sees his friend - Goyle, wearing glasses and enquires him why he is wearing glasses. To this, Goyle replies - They are reading glasses. Actor, Tom Felton forgot his lines after this and in a humorous manner added “I didn’t know you could read.” This unscripted line for sure was better than any other response the script could have had. So much so, that the director loved it too and added this instead of the original intended response.

Actor Matthew McConaughey before scenes bangs his chest and humms in order to concentrate better on his scenes. During the filming of - The Wolf of the Wall Street, while McConaughey was performing his ritual before the take, it was recorded.

Actor, Leonardo DiCaprio loved it a lot and felt it resonated a lot with his character and thus asked the director to incorporate it into the scene, which he did, and the rest is history.

Matthew McConaughey’s improvisation in Dazed and Confused became so memorable that it evolved into his signature catchphrase. In the scene, he delivers the now-famous line, “Alright, Alright, Alright,” while approaching a group of girls. The charm of the moment resonated so strongly that McConaughey even referenced it during his Oscar acceptance speech.

The director had just written -the actor looks in the mirror, but Robert De Niro being the clever artist he is, added this masterful line which made history.

Jaws movie was another masterpiece produced in Hollywood. Based on the story of three people trying to catch a monstrous shark. The entire time the movie was being filmed, the cast and crew always kept saying they needed a bigger boat for the scenes. So, actor Roy Schneider took the opportunity and incorporated this line into the movie which has definitely grown to become a defining moment of the movie.

Titanic is the most-watched film in the history of cinema. One of the best scenes in the movie is when Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet are standing on the hull of the ship, Leonardo DiCaprio screams “I’m the king of the world.”

The dialogue was originally unscripted but was a last-minute input by the director and today it has gained such popularity that it's known as the titanic pose, where you stand with your hands stretched and scream “I’m the king of the world.”

Pretty Woman, starring Julia Roberts and Richard Gere, is one of Hollywood’s most beloved films. In a memorable scene, Gere presents Roberts with a jewelry box containing a necklace. When she reaches for it, he playfully snaps the box shut, making her laugh. It was later revealed that this moment was improvised by Gere, and Roberts’ laughter was a genuine reaction.

When Princess Leia tells him “I love you” before he leaves to rescue Luke Skywalker, Ford is supposed to reply, “I love you too.” Instead, he improvised with “I know.” The line has since become a trademark of the franchise and is widely praised by fans.

Ford's off-the-cuff delivery helped solidify Han Solo as one of the most beloved and charismatic characters in pop culture.
