Brief Character History

Vernon Dupree is the son of developer Paul Cheeks Dupree, who created the affluent gated community of Fairmont Crest in Maryland in 1951. Vernon became a business mogul like his father but also took part in the civil rights demonstrations of the 1970s, which saw him arrested for protesting at a rally. At another such protest, Vernon met successful girl group and solo singer Anita; soon after, he was elected United States Senator, and had two daughters with Anita: Nicole Dupree and Dani Dupree. With his connections, Vernon helped set up Dani's husband, fledgling lawyer Bill Hamilton, in his own firm. Vernon eventually retired from politics, but his time in office inspired his grandson, Martin Richardson, to follow in his footsteps and become a congressman.

Vernon was furious when Bill cheated on Dani with his paralegal, Hayley Lawson, and divorced Dani for her, wanting to have their wedding at Fairmont Crest's country club. Vernon went to Anita when Bill called in his favors to the Duprees and asked for them to attend the ceremony so the ostracized Hayley would have guests; Vernon feared that their refusal would expose a secret the elder Duprees were keeping about Martin. Vernon apologized to the outraged Dani, only saying that he wouldn't be making such a request of her unless he had to.
