2009 Daytime Emmys | Pre-Nominations Announced

The pre-nominations for this year's Daytime Emmys have now been announced. From this list will come this year's nominees and, eventually, the winners. In a rule rollback, shows may now have up to two nominees in any given category.

If ain't broke, don't fix it. That seems to be the lesson learned from this year Daytime Emmy - now known as the Daytime Entertainment Emmys -- nominations. The National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (NATAS) has released this year's list of pre-screen nominees in the performance categories of Daytime Dramas for the 36th Annual Daytime Entertainment Emmy Awards. This year each soap has up to two nominees in each of the six acting category, down from the three that were possible last year.

Briefly, each soap holds its own mini-Emmy ceremony in which the cast and crew cast their votes for the top performers in the six acting categories -- Lead Actor, Lead Actress, Supporting Actor, Supporting Actress, Younger Actor and Younger Actress. The top two vote-getters in each category are forwarded as pre-nominees. In the event of a tie, shows were permitted to submit more than two names. Unlike years past, there were no ties this year. Due to restrictions, however, some shows have fewer nominees in the Younger Actor and Younger Actress fields. The pre-nominees are then put forward into the pool from which the final Emmy nominees will be drawn.

The pre-screening process was put into effect six years ago as a response to growing criticism that shows with larger casts were unfairly seizing control of the nomination process. For more information on the reasons behind the pre-nominations, please click here.

The nominees for the year's Daytime Emmys will be announced at a later date. The location and date for the Emmy telecast has also yet to be determined.
