soapcentral.com panelists predict the Emmy winners: Lisa Svenson

LISA SVENSSON

Lisa Christine Svenson is a non-viewer (of soaps and virtually all television). She is a writer who lives with her husband, child, and a variety of pets (who were somewhat helpful in assisting her with her selections, although her older cat refused to cooperate entirely). She was overwhelmed by the number and character of awards being handed out this year, and really strained her brain to find reasonable and interesting ways of making predictions. These methods are described below, after her prediction in each category.

Previous Predictions
2004: 1 for 8
2003: 0 for 8
2002: 1 for 8
2001: 2 for 8

OUTSTANDING DRAMA SERIES

General Hospital simply because my grandmother watches it somewhat regularly. She's watched it for years, so there must be something to it. Yes, other people have watched other shows for years, but there's something about a grandmother's wisdom that we need to trust. Also, the video clips sound both tragic (hotel fire, and we know from the news those can be ghastly), and humorous (odd couples stuck together can lead to mayhem and mischief).

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTOR

Grant Aleksander (Phillip Spaulding, GL) Okay, this category seemed to be filled with medical issues. Paternity tests, lies, more paternity tests, more lies, hospital bed scenes galore. But here is Phillip Spaulding, a man with mental issues who is not taking his medicine! Worse, he is storing it in his briefcase (what if a thief steals that and dies of an overdose of whatever mystery medicine it might be? Think of the lawsuits! I mean, you can't go too far these days without seeing some advertisement for a lawyer who's just itching to get his hands on a poor thief who was a victim of his own stupidity). Anyway, his friend is suggesting electric shock therapy! Does this sound wise? How long until they're doing the frontal lobotomy (I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy)? This could get interesting.

OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTRESS
Juliet Mills (Tabitha Lenox, PS) Sometimes it seems to me as I read of the women actresses that their only role is to be romantically psychotic. This actress, however, seems to have had some bizarre scriptwriting in her favor. A Thanksgiving from hell? She's left to deal with flock of live turkeys? Between Endora and Tabitha, and the mayhem that ensues, it sounded like I was reading about an episode of Bewitched. We need to remember to use our powers for good, boys and girls.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTOR

Cameron Mathison (Ryan Lavery, AMC) The way I read these scenes (which is probably wrong), this man cures a girl with a bad name from mental delusions. These powers should put him higher on the ratings scales than Dr. Phil. Really.

OUTSTANDING SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Jeanne Cooper (Katherine Chancellor, Y&R) This poor woman is an alcoholic who gets nighttime ghost visitors to help cure of her of her drinking problem before it kills her. Shadows of Jacob Marley, from A Christmas Carol by the great Charles Dickens. These chains you forged in life...

OUTSTANDING YOUNGER ACTOR
David Lago (Raul Guittierez, Y&R) Sounds like this guy is saddled with a tough role, being hopelessly in love with a woman and because of that, having to leave. Yes, you are the light of my existence, my reason for living, and now that I've told you, my life is over and I've got to go. Sounds like he has to play this scene many times (some people never manage to say goodbye).

OUTSTANDING YOUNGER ACTRESS
This is a tough vote for me, because I am so confused by Alexa Havins (Babe Chandler, AMC) and Eden Riegel (Bianca Montgomery, AMC) in their televised game of musical babies. I think I will go with Eden Riegel (Bianca Montgomery, AMC) because she's the one who loses and has to give up a baby.

OUTSTANDING WRITING IN A DRAMA SERIES
The Young and the Restless This was a simple choice based on my choices above. I had two votes each for characters on AMC and Y&R, and only Y&R was a contender. The Charles Dickens-esque scenes probably would have tipped the scale, anyway (and that musical babies thing still makes my head spin).
