At home, Adam was happily surprised that Chelsea had kissed him. Chelsea told Adam how appreciative she was that everything about the evening that Adam planned was about making her comfortable. She was excited about their future. Adam assured her they would move at the pace she decided. He took her by the hand and led her to the couch. They took their wine and toasted themselves for finding their best selves, hopefully together, he added. “I think we’re off to a great start,” Chelsea concluded.

Adam asked how Chelsea’s wing at the house was and if she needed anything. Chelsea said all she needed was to know if he was really over Sally. He assured her there wasn’t even a flicker of a flicker. Chelsea noted that she and Billy had found peace but was worried he and Sally hadn’t. Before she opened her heart to him again, she needed to know he was over his ex.

Adam said that the one thing he and Sally could agree on was that they were over. They discussed the night they cheated. They wondered if their true feelings had something to do with it. Adam regretted hurting Sally but he didn’t regret that everying that happened got them to the place he and Chelsea were at. Adam said he hadn’t intended on winning Chelsea over that night, but hoped it was the beginning of years of good memories with her. Chelsea said this is the version of Adam she forgot existed and they kissed some more. Adam handed Chelsea a rose before she left for her room. Once alone, he was thrilled about the evening. In her room, Chelsea smelled the rose and smiled.

Nick dropped by the main house to tell Victor and Nikki that Sharon and Phyllis were missing. Nikki instantly suspected Phyllis and and wondered if Sharon had gone off her meds. Nick told them what he knew. He didn’t want to worry prematurely, but he thought extra security wouldn’t hurt. Victor agreed.

At the asylum, Phyllis thought the goal of staying alive was stupid. She yelled at the speaker on the wall for instructions and answers. Sharon said to hell with whoever was behind it, to win the game they had to figure a way out together.

The song started playing again, and Phyllis said it must be something they should both recognize. Sharon was frustrated at the game and that someone was playing with her again. Phyllis said that whoever the person was, they could see and hear them, and they needed to play along to get out of there. The music stopped, so Sharon said to the speaker, “Okay, we’re in.” “Excellent decision. Let’s play,” the voice said ominously.

The voice wouldn’t give them his or her name but instructed them to go to the safe. There, they found a birthday card. Sharon sarcastically asked if it was his birthday and what his idea of a party was. He didn’t answer, but the siren beeped. “I’m 18 away from Independence Day,” read the card.

Sharon spotted a calendar and checked June 16, which had nothing. She checked on July 22nd, and the music started again. Phyllis put the date into the safe combination, and it opened. Phyllis explained that July 22, 2013, was the night at the charity event when Sharon tried to kill her.

Sharon recalled the event differently than Phyllis and said it was an accident, denying that she pushed Phyllis down a flight of stairs, resulting in a coma. Phyllis said it didn’t matter, as the song that was playing was the same song that was on while they were fighting that night. They both realized this game was all about them.

Phyllis told Sharon that whoever it was behind the speaker, he knew them, and they went to a lot of trouble to arrange it all. Inside the safe were two phones, but they were locked. He told them they could each use a phone to call a loved one, but only one call each, so choose well. The voice instructed, “You will tell them you went out of town for a bit, maybe for business or to sort through some emotional issues.” “He’s talking to you there,” Phyllis quipped to Sharon. “Whatever you think will convince them you’re okay. Make sure to tell them you’ll be back soon and not to worry,” he added.

Sharon asked if it was the truth that they would be going home soon, but the voice didn’t answer. Phyllis pointed out that the phones were locked. The voice said that as soon as they agreed to the terms, the phones would be unlocked. Phyllis agreed for her and Sharon. The voice warned that if they tried to alert their loved ones to the truth, the signal would immediately scramble and disconnect, and there would be a price to pay. “When you try to take control, you’ll be penalized,” he added. Sharon asked how they would be penalized and pointed out that as long as they played along, he couldn’t hurt them. “Can’t I?” he mused.

Phyllis sighed; she was getting tired of the freak behind the curtain schtick. Sharon begged her to stop. They told the voice that they were ready to make their calls, so he told them to enter the date they used on the safe, but backwards this time. Sharon typed 31-22-7 into the phone, and it unlocked. Phyllis decided to call Summer, and Sharon chose Nick.

Nick was still at the ranch house when Sharon called and told him that she was in Sedona. She said that she had texted the girls and pretended to be unsure why they wouldn't have gotten her messages. She said she had lost her phone, so she was using a burner until her new one arrived. Nick believed her and told her to enjoy her me-time, but he became concerned when she asked him to tell the girls for her that she was going to be away. Meanwhile, Phyllis called Summer and told her she had lost her phone and apologized for worrying her. She said she got busy following up some business leads but asked her not to tell Billy. Instead, she told Summer she loved her several times and asked her to also tell Daniel. When she hung up, Phyllis looked at Sharon in disbelief.

When Nick hung up, Nikki questioned Sharon’s supposed trip to Sedona. Nick seemed concerned about the texts that the girls didn’t get and thought it sounded off that Sharon claimed she was too tired to call her kids. He didn’t want to be an alarmist, but there were red flags all over the conversation.

Nick knew the nightmare was behind them, but there was something off. Nikki disagreed and said that Sharon called him because it was a quicker call than phoning both the girls directly. Victor agreed that Sharon had told him the truth and was safe. Nick received a text from Summer telling him that Phyllis called her and she “was fine.” Nikki was glad they were both okay but found it weird that they would both check in around the same time. Victor agreed it was odd but also thought there wasn’t anything to worry about.

Back at the asylum, Sharon noted that Nick had many questions, but he didn’t suspect a thing. “Neither did Summer,” Phyllis agreed. Sharon noted that as they’d waved off any possible rescue attempt, it didn’t seem like winning. “But it will. We’re getting out of here,” Phyllis said determinedly.

Sharon and Phyllis asked the voice what happened next, and what was their next test. The speaker blasted the siren, and they clutched their ears. “Rest. Sleep. Tomorrow is another day,” the voice ordered. Sharon and Phyllis reluctantly sat on the couch as they bickered. They wondered if it was someone who wanted them to face their loathing of each other. “That makes no sense to me, unless they want one final showdown. Maybe we’re not playing against a captor at all. Maybe we’re just playing against each other,” Phyllis suggested.
