In the park, Phyllis told Daniel that the investigation was madness, but they would get through it together. She reminded him that she was his mother, and he knew what she was capable of. “I’ll never give up, and neither should any of you,” Phyllis told Daniel, Summer, and Lucy.

Lucy asked why Chance wanted Daniel to get a lawyer. “He must think Dad is guilty,” Lucy said. She wondered if Daniel would be arrested. Summer told Lucy the police were a long way off from arresting anyone. Daniel wondered what kind of sick person was setting him up and why.

Phyllis flashed back to Sharon yelling at Heather about Lucy at the Athletic Club. “She is out of control, and if you and Daniel don't set up some serious boundaries, I’m telling you my patience has just about run out!” Sharon had hollered.

Phyllis said whoever was behind this had a clear motive. “Someone diabolical and so clever that they could break into your apartment and plant evidence without anyone ever finding out. What if it were Sharon?” Phyllis wondered.

Daniel thought that it was a pretty big stretch to suggest Sharon. “I was standing there with Heather when Sharon came running in like a bat out of hell, threatening her to keep Lucy away from Faith,” Phyllis reminded them. She added that Nick, Faith, and Mariah had been questioning Sharon’s stability and mental health.

Daniel still thought it was hard to imagine Sharon doing something like that. Phyllis said it was odd that Sharon showed up at Daniel’s apartment the night that Heather died, and no one knew about that until now. “But who does she tell? Oh, the police, with a made-up story that you and Heather had been arguing and she was afraid of you — and then all this evidence shows up in the apartment. It’s enough for me,” Phyllis said.

Daniel suggested that his mom wanted to hang this on Sharon because of all the years Phyllis had spent hating her. Phyllis said she might be the only one in town who knew what Sharon was truly capable of.

Phyllis flashed back to her arguments with Sharon over the years, including when Sharon got physical and told Phyllis that she made her that way. “If you don’t think Sharon is capable of violence, you are so wrong,” Phyllis said. Summer wondered if Sharon was capable of doing something as horrible as killing Heather. “She tried to kill me once,” Phyllis reminded them.

Phyllis recalled fighting with Sharon and falling down the stairs. “That stunt of hers put me in a coma for over a year. And we all know what she did to Cameron Kirsten,” Phyllis added. Summer said that Sharon killed Cameron out of self-defense, but Phyllis said that Sharon was still capable of it.

Phyllis thought it was possible that Sharon came to the apartment to apologize but was unstable, got in a fight with Heather, and accidentally killed her. “Okay, but then what? She framed me because I stirred up bad memories?” Daniel asked.

Daniel said that he was having a hard enough time grieving and dealing with the police investigation and didn’t need his mom going off about Sharon. Phyllis agreed to stop talking about it. She said she could understand why they would think she was overreacting after all of the things she had done. Lucy wondered what kind of things.

“Your grandmother has been known to take situations to the extreme from time to time,” Daniel said. Phyllis offered to tell Lucy some stories. Summer laughed and said she didn’t think that was a good idea, but Lucy said she was 16 and wanted to know. “I’ll keep it clean,” Phyllis said. Daniel said that didn’t make him feel any better, and they all laughed.

Phyllis began by saying that everything she had done was to protect others. She then began recalling memories that made them laugh, like when she put an octopus in Christine and Lucy’s Grandpa Paul's honeymoon bed.

Phyllis recalled other times that she went undercover as various people, like a trucker and a hotel maid. Phyllis told Lucy that she only wanted to be part of a family. Phyllis said she made mistakes and screwed up, starting with Daniel’s father, Danny. Phyllis had flashbacks to when she came to Genoa City and tried to be with Danny, but eventually, he fell for her and proposed.

Phyllis told how Christine exposed that Danny wasn’t Daniel’s biological father, and Phyllis lost the custody battle. Phyllis tearfully told how she hadn’t seen Daniel for years and missed him so much. She and Daniel recalled the moment they met when he was a teenager. “And here we are,” Phyllis said as she and Daniel smiled.

Phyllis told Lucy she was sharing the stories because she wanted her to know that people change. Phyllis said she had changed and grown mainly because of her kids, and they were the reason that she kept going. Daniel suggested that Phyllis tell Summer’s story.

Phyllis said she would need to talk about Jack. She told the story of how she and Jack first got together, flashing back to some fun memories and how hurt they were about not being able to have a child together. Phyllis said that when Diane showed up with Kyle, that ultimately ripped Jack and Phyllis apart. “I loved him. There are just some hurdles you cannot get over,” Phyllis told Lucy.

Phyllis said she then connected with Nick after Cassie’s accident. “I was lost. Nick was grieving, and we just found each other,” Phyllis explained. Daniel said it was amazing how much of their lives can be traced back to the night of the accident.

Summer quietly noted that if the accident hadn’t happened, she wouldn’t have been born. Phyllis said that Summer was a great surprise but divulged that she didn’t know if Nick or Jack was the father. She recalled how Michael was so supportive and helped her.

Phyllis had more flashbacks of marrying Nick and told the story of when Phyllis was born on the elevator with Jack during an ice storm. Phyllis recalled how Sharon hated her so much that she swapped the paternity tests so they didn’t know Nick was Summer’s father, but eventually, it was sorted out.

Phyllis concluded that although she and Nick didn’t live happily ever after, it was a great ride. Phyllis said she and Nick were and still are good together. “Anyway, what do you think of your granny now that I told you all those stories?” Phyllis asked Lucy.

Lucy thought Phyllis was kind of awesome and said Daniel and Summer were lucky to have her as a mom. She noted that Phyllis would do anything for her kids, just like Heather. Daniel thought they should call it a night, but Lucy said she was too wired for sleep.

Summer asked what Phyllis was going to do to help Daniel. Phyllis didn’t know yet but said that Daniel was innocent and she would prove it. Phyllis told Daniel she wasn’t pointing fingers at Sharon because of their history. “There are so many things that I’ve learned through my life. One, my internal radar is on point, and two, people will do really crazy things to get what they want,” Phyllis said.

Daniel told Phyllis not to go undercover or go against the police investigation. Phyllis assured him that she would not. She said that she would gather information only. “Chance already thinks you are guilty, and I have to change his mind. Don’t stop me,” Phyllis said.

Summer and Daniel told her they knew better than to try. “You are innocent, and I will be proving that. And as a family, we will get through this together,” Phyllis added, and they all hugged.

Next week on The Young and the Restless:

Traci: “What happened?!”

Diane: “Jack asked me to move out tonight.”

In Daniel’s apartment, Chance is searching a coffee table drawer when another policeman calls him over and says they have something.

On a video call, Danny asks: “What exactly is this evidence the police have against you?”

Daniel: “Let’s just say it’s solid enough that I’m expecting a knock on my door at any moment.”
