On The Young and the Restless, Damian hasn't shown much empathy or concern for his mother's welfare. That all changed on the March 18th episode. But do we buy it as genuine?
The Young and the Restless: Unity in Adversity

Damian Kane (Jermaine Rivers) rushed over to Nate's (Sean Dominic) apartment, and he was very concerned about his mother, who was about to undergo some experimental treatment for the cancer she had been diagnosed with. Damian wanted to know if she had been admitted to the hospital yet. Damian urged Nate to check his phone and find out. Nate told Damian that she had been admitted and was being prepped to take an infusion. He wondered if he could get to the hospital in time or not. Damian asked Nate, who said that was a great idea. Nate immediately canceled his lunch date with Audra (Zuleyka Silver) and told her that he and Damian were going to Chicago to be at Amy’s (Valarie Pettiford) side.

Where did this sudden caring come from? Damian had been rather cold and, some could say, even callous when it came to his mother's health and the possible ramifications of a failed treatment. Fans and viewers of The Young and the Restless took to the Soap Central Message Boards to discuss whether they thought it was genuine.

Damian, Great Son and Brother
“Do you buy this? Damian is very concerned about his mother. He is getting along so well with Nate. Damian thanked Nate countess times today for helping his mother. Lily and Devon still don't trust anyone. But Damian is pouring it on thick. I'd like to think Damian is sincere but he has changed very quickly.” -Loyalyr
“I think he’s doing this to get Lily in his bed.” -perky7kc
“When Damien rushed over to Nate's place, he seemed genuinely concerned about the news he heard about his mother being admitted into the hospital!
When Damien and Nate had lunch that day, they had good conversations and Damien even said that they had similar upbringings...I think Damien is sincere with Nate and that he appreciates everything Nate has done for his mother! In saying that, I do think Damien is trying to impress Lily and let her see how concerned he is about his mother to score some brownie points with her...I saw how he looked at her when he was talking about Amy should have family with her.” - Regular Board user zenmaster5
“The 180 was incredibly swift, but Damian and Nate referring to each other as "my brother"— not even "half," which Amy is scrupulous about—is so sweet and cute, I can embrace it. Maybe Amy's rapidly declining so the brothers bond equally quickly. Really interested to know what's coming up that necessitates that.” -montauk.way
I think the sudden caring is genuine, and I’d like to believe it, as any other scenario is heartless. I think that Damian has realized that time is limited and that he may lose one family member, but he has gained a brother in Nate. While not a dramatic turn of events, it's a touching and heartfelt moment I think we need.
