Shemar Moore extends stay at Y&R

Fans dreading the announced departure of Shemar Moore (Malcolm Winters) from The Young and the Restless in May have been granted a reprieve. The actor has extended his stay through the end of 2001.

Moore was to have made a final departure from The Young and the Restless this summer, but show executives presented the actor with a new contract that would allow him to remain with the show while still pursuing outside ventures. Currently, Moore is traveling with the stage production The Fabric of a Man.

In April 2000, Moore inked a similar deal with Y&R that allowed him to take time off from filming daily installments of the show. He made the most of that deal and filmed a part in the to-be-released film The Brothers, a film with DL Hughley and Bill Belamy that opens in March. Moore had also landed a leading part in a sitcom called Celebrity, but no networks picked up the pilot and the show was scrapped. Moore has also been hosting Soul Train.

According to Moore, the decision to extend his contract with Y&R is something of a thank you to the show. Moore is reportedly pleased that Y&R execs would allow him time off to tackle other projects and renewed his contract as repayment for the execs' kindness.

Moore is now scheduled to leave Y&R sometime in November.
