The Young and the Restless is bringing back a character who hasn't been seen in Genoa City since the 1980s. According to Deadline, soap opera veteran Valarie Pettiford will take on the role of Amy Lewis, who was last seen in Genoa City in 1988, when the role was played by Stephanie E. Williams.

Pettiford got her soap opera start on the now-defunct NBC soap Another World, playing Detective Courtney Walker from 1988 to 1990. The same year Pettiford left Another World, she landed a part on the classic ABC soap One Life to Live, where she played Dr. Sheila Price from 1990 to 1994.

That was Pettiford's last foray into daytime drama until now. Over the last 30 years, Pettiford has appeared in a plethora of primetime series, including Walker, Texas Ranger; Sabrina the Teenage Witch; The West Wing; CSI Miami; and Criminal Minds. Pettiford was also a regular on the TV shows Half & Half and The Family Business, per IMDb.

Pettiford is also a Tony-nominated performer for her work in the 1999 Broadway production of Fosse, based on the life of famed choreographer Bob Fosse.

Who was Amy Lewis?

Amy will seem like a brand-new character to newer fans, considering the decades she's been away from the Genoa City scene.

When Y&R fans first met Amy in 1983, she worked with Paul Williams and Andy Richards at their private detective firm. After dating Tyrone Jackson, Amy became involved with Nathan Hastings. When Amy realized that Nathan was illiterate, the two became close when Amy gave Nathan reading lessons. Nathan was the biological father of Nate Hastings, the former surgeon and current corporate raider involved with Audra Charles.

Amy was also a singer who performed with Danny Romalotti, Traci Abbott, Gina Roma, and Lauren Fenmore. After Amy left town, she was rarely spoken of again.

There's no word on why Amy is returning to town after all these years, but perhaps she will have a storyline with Nate, since she was close to his father at one time. Nate hasn't had a front-burner story since his breakup with Victoria Newman last year, so a woman from his father's past could make things interesting.
