Don't look now but there's a monster behind you: The Young and the Restless Two Scoops for the week of October 28, 2024

It was another week of chaos in Genoa City as ghosts and monsters came to town, but all Phyllis saw was Christine flying in on a broomstick.

We started the week with Chance coming to the Athletic Club to arrest Daniel. He didn’t even seem slightly apologetic. Just straight to reading him his rights and putting cuffs on him because, as he put it, he needed to do things by the book. Pretty sure the book doesn’t say to pick a suspect, any suspect, and choose them without regard to evidence.

Of course, it’s TV, so Chance is going by the book that says that possession is nine-tenths of the law. And since Daniel possessed some evidence, that’s enough for him. Case closed. It doesn’t matter that Sharon is possessed with revenge or that she sees ghosts. But more on that later.

Red alert

Ok, I know it’s Phyllis, and we can’t expect anything less than over-the-top, but her reaction to Christine showing up as Daniel was being arrested seemed a wee bit unreasonable. Even if the Bug hated Phyllis, she didn’t hate Daniel. Or Heather.

She’s also *this* close to being Daniel’s stepmom, so it’s fairly safe to say that she probably had good intentions walking through the door, but Phyllis losing it over the sight of her was a good way to vent. It also gave us another opportunity to value Michael’s hair. What is happening with that?

Somehow, Christine and Phyllis mashed through their insults and came to the conclusion that they’d work together, but then…crickets. Finally, someone listened to Phyllis’ theory and was willing to run with it, but they didn’t. I’m going to assume that Phyllis actually provided the crucial details about Sharon’s statement and motivation, but we just didn’t get to see it. Yet.

Nothing to see here, folks

Building points for determination, Phyllis, of course, went to Chance. And this might have been my favorite Chance moment of all time for all the wrong reasons.

Phyllis told Chance he needed to find the real killer because Daniel wasn’t it, and Chance actually said, “Easier said than done.” But is it, though? I mean, how would he know? He’s only had tunnel vision on Daniel since he asked to be assigned to the case. Remember how adamant Chance was that Heather had a lover? Ah, the good ol’ days when Chance at least thought outside the box.

But back to the moment when Chance, the “brilliant detective” as they call him, really showed his skills. Phyllis told him the killer was still at large. Chance not only dismissed that idea, but he mocked her for it. “Who, Sharon?!” he said sarcastically, followed by — and I quote — “there is zero evidence supporting that theory.”

Again, I’m not a detective, and I don’t play one on TV. But I am old enough to remember TV bricks, and if I had one, it would have hurled from my hands. Zero evidence? Let us count the ways.

Stick with us here, Chance. Sharon literally put herself at the scene of the crime, and (minor detail no detective likes to hear) she was the last known person to see Heather alive. If it feels like I’m repeating myself, it’s because I am.

It’s making me wonder what the point is. Are they just trying to make it even more shocking for everyone when they find out what Sharon really did? Do they want us to figure out that Chance isn’t that bright? Are they building a case that Chance secretly resents Daniel and is jumping on the opportunity that someone planted evidence?

None of it makes sense. Unless it’s not supposed to, because those are the types of nuances you’d have in a nightmare. Is this all a bad dream? Are we going to wake up to Heather in the shower and Daniel wondering what day it is?

Jack and Diane

Someone needs to convince me this breakup is real. It came out of nowhere, and I’m already sus that the Sharon thing is a dream, is it blanketing Genoa City? One minute Jack and Diane were in love and desperate to find a way to save Kyle from the clutches of the Moustache. The next they’re getting a divorce, or an annulment, or something. And Diane, after all those months of convincing people she’d changed is now loud and proud to have been power-hungry all along?

Not buying it. After Kyle and Jack started to “thaw,” as they put it, they were at the GCAC bar, and Diane stomped over and noted that they were on better terms without her. And there was a little tiny moment there after Kyle walked away. Jack said he was leaving, but he and Diane looked at each other for one second and yep, maybe I’m wrong, and maybe it was just that moment that they were both hurting but angry, but it did look possible that it was a knowing look. As in, Diane was sacrificing herself to get Kyle in with Jack again, and she’d unpry their son from Victor by jumping into that fire instead.

It has possibilities. Maybe Diane will enjoy the power at Glissade and only having to answer to Victor, she enjoys it a little too much and strays from the plan. And in a complete 180, instead of breaking up Jack and Diane, maybe they cause problems for Victor and Nikki instead. Maybe their plan all along was to do what Victor was doing to them to Victor himself.

Kyle’s redemption tour

GC’s resident Pollyanna, Claire Newman, has taken on the void of the voice of reason. Her sympathetic ear and empathetic advice has Kyle’s head spinning. She even managed to work her magic into getting him to lighten up on that sneer he does too well.

Even Summer was able to have a normal conversation with him, and Kyle even moved Jack to tears at some point. Victor asked Kyle if he’d go back to Jabot and although the words were what he’d want to hear, the tone was not.

Diane ranting in Victor’s face about revenge is music to Victor’s ears. But Kyle’s lost his rage, and Victor knows it. On that note, chances seem pretty good that Victor’s going to trade in Junior for his mama soon.

The other ditty

Somehow, Victor and Nikki’s arguments about Jack seem more legit than Jack and Diane’s about Victor. Probably because we know Nikki’s got some valid points to argue. But will it matter? Not really. Nikki can be mad all she wants as she finds out the stuff Victor is doing to Lily, Jack, or Kyle.

It’s less than other things she’s discovered that her husband did, and he only got an earful through her pursed lips, and then she forgot and moved on. Lily was right, Nikki is just as ruthless as Victor when she wants something, and even if she stayed mad, Victor's going to surprise her with a quietly-built replica of their old ranch house mansion that Sharon burnt down the last time she was off her meds.

The Contender

Speaking of Lily, she still has me confused. She says she’s accomplished a lot and that she built Chancellor Industries, but when? I had to laugh when she asked Devon why it was so hard to get back what was hers. Maybe she’s qualified for the position, but it’s not “hers.” Not the job, not the company. And the way Devon told her that was hilarious.

To us, I mean. Lily was infuriated with the truth bomb when Devon clearly explained to his sister that Chancellor Industries (or the CEO position, for that matter), was not, in fact, "hers." She was so enraged that she couldn’t promise not to have a fit at Devon’s wedding because the father of the bride would be there. She even demanded Devon to tell Victor not to come.

By the time the wedding rolls around, Billy will have been forced to make nice with Lily, and she can happily go to the wedding and dare Victor to come and try to take her company. She got my hopes up for a brief moment after her chat with Audra, but then her determination turned to entitled brat again.

Nate’s family tree

So, Nate got the most mind-blowing news of his life this week from his dad's former co-worker-slash-lover, Amy Lewis. Raise your hand if you were surprised by Amy's news.

After a couple of months of speculation, Nate found out he had a half-brother. We already know a little bit about Damien, sounds like his life might be unstable, maybe he’s a little angry, maybe he feels a little cheated in life and he doesn’t need his brother thinking he’s all that and telling him how to live his life.

Hoping for more, but at the moment, it seems like it could go that route. And throw in a triangle with Audra, or bring back Elena and messy the whole thing up even more. Or, maybe Lily will be interested? But bring Damien already, we don’t need a long build-up.

Nate called Olivia though, and with the 10,000th episode coming up, and Devon’s wedding, it would be great if she responded in person.

Happy Halloween

Daniel coming to Tessa for advice was a nice surprise, I thought. It’s been a while since we’ve seen much of Tessa, and her time with Daniel when he was down and out was a good reminder that she’s funny, kind, and fun.

And a smart way for the actors to clean up the set post-holiday. Touche, writers on that one.

Ghostbusters

Meanwhile, back at the ranch, Sharon was not having a happy Halloween at all. While she struggled to replace her vengeful Cameron-self with her kind Nick-self, Heather walked in. I’m not sure if she was Sharon’s guilt-self, or if it was Heather’s ghost, but it didn’t matter.

Heather said she was there to stay. Every minute, of every hour, she’d be there to remind Sharon of what she did until she told the truth and spared Daniel. We cheered for two reasons. One, Heather was back. And two, come on and confess already. Or at least have a big freakout screaming at the version of Heather that only Sharon can see, but do it in front of everyone at the park. Something undeniably huge.

Just don’t send Sharon away to Fairview and not allow her to have any visitors while Daniel’s trial drags out.

Until next time!
