The Young and the Restless' Camryn Grimes (Mariah Copeland) and Cait Fairbanks (Tessa Porter) open up about Teriah's double engagement story, which marks the first time the show has featured a same-sex engaged pair.
Fans of The Young and the Restless were thrilled to see Tessa Porter (Cait Fairbanks) ask Mariah Copeland (Camryn Grimes) to marry her during the January 20th episode of the CBS soap opera, but the script has flipped today with Mariah now asking Tessa the big question. This second special moment for the pair is certainly a surprise, but a welcome one -- to both the fans and the actresses who play the newly engaged (twice over!) couple.
"We get information in our scripts literally as we go, so after the first proposal, it was a surprise to learn about the second," Grimes enthuses to EW. "I thought nothing could have been more appropriate for these characters, who as a couple view themselves as equals. That concept was really exciting to me, and after being engaged personally, now it seems crazy that it doesn't [happen] more often!"
Fairbanks also admits that she was completely surprised by the writers' decision to give Mariah a proposal moment, as well.

"I had no clue there was a second proposal to be perfectly honest!" she reveals. "Getting proposed to did make me more emotional because I didn't have to say anything and I could just absorb the speech Mariah gave! It was a special and beautiful moment."
As noted by EW, Teriah is Y&R's first engaged same-sex couple. The pair's love story began in 2017, not with a flashy coming-out story, but rather with a very subtle situation of two women just slowly realizing that they loved each other.
"That's always been the most beautiful thing about this story," Grimes said to EW last year. "It was something new for them and it was definitely new for the audience, but it was like any other love story where it takes you by surprise. It existed without labels. I really appreciated that at a time when labels could be so restrictive for some people. It just felt like a really genuine, authentic story about two individuals falling for each other, no matter the circumstances."
