Y&R reaches mind-blowing milestone

The Young and the Restless has extended its record-breaking run as the number one daytime drama series. Y&R's improbable reign began when George H.W. Bush was elected president and a gallon of gas cost less than a dollar.

The Young and the Restless has marked a major milestone. Scratch that. The CBS soap has reached a milestone that is still too amazing to fully be able to process.

The long-running soap opera that chronicles life in Genoa City, Wisconsin, notched its 1,500th consecutive week as daytime's #1 drama series. That is a total that is equal to nearly 29 years.

To mark the occasion, the official Y&R Twitter account thanked fans for making the milestone possible. "We're grateful to our fans for this incredible milestone and for many wonderful years of The Young and the Restless," the show shared in a tweet.

Just in case you do not want to whip out your soap abacus to do the math: Y&R's streak at the top dates all the way back to December 1988. Other events in December 1988: the premieres of the motion pictures The Naked Gun and Rain Man, singers Roy Orbison and Sylvester passed away, actors Zo Kravitz and Alfred Enoch were born, and the entire Internet had about 500,000 users.

So you may be wondering, "What soap was at the head of the pack before The Young and the Restless took over number one?" That's a really good question -- but we're not revealing the answer. Yet. Share your guesses in the Comments section. We'll pick at least one correct guess for a special prize.
