Y&R reprises classic material; storylines set to air in December

Material by The Young and the Restless' new/old writing team begins taping today.

Today's a big day for The Young and the Restless, because material by the CBS soap's new writing team -- which includes the show's former "glory days" writers, Sally Sussman and Kay Alden -- begins today.

Y&R veteran Melody Thomas Scott (Nikki Newman) took to Twitter with a photo of her current script and added the caption, "In lieu of our popular Polaroids, I must share R 1st script w/new/old writers! Can't wait to return 2 classic YR 2day!"

As previously reported, Y&R's most recent head writer, Charles Pratt Jr., left to take on the position of showrunner for Lee Daniel's upcoming FOX series, Star. In his absence, the CBS soap decided to re-hire Sussman, who previously worked in various writing positions in the early 1980s and mid-2000s, as head writer.

"Sally was part of the team that first brought Y&R to its long-standing position as America's #1 daytime drama and brings with her years of experience writing serialized storylines," Steve Kent, senior executive vice president of programming for Sony Pictures Television, said in a statement about Sussman's homecoming. "Her long-standing familiarity with the citizens of Genoa City and her great storytelling make her a perfect choice to take the reins at Y&R."

Former head writer Kay Alden has also returned to the soap as a story consultant.

According to Scott's script, the material by the show's current writing team will begin airing in early December.

UPDATE (October 21): Scott's tweet has since been deleted.
