Michael Muhney: Not returning to Y&R

Michael Muhney will not be reprising the role of Adam Newman on The Young and the Restless. The actor made the announcement -- and confirmed his desire to return -- in a statement on social media.

Fans holding out hope that Michael Muhney (Adam Newman) might be reprising his Emmy-nominated role on The Young and the Restless will have to let go of those hopes.

"Just got an official call, although things got very close, I will not be returning to Y&R," Muhney shared on Twitter. "That part of my life is over. Moving on... I was hopeful for a return, but now I'm hopeful for the future. Now you'll just have to promise to tune in to my future projects!"

Muhney then offered comfort with the sage words of Dr. Seuss, "Don't cry because it's over, smile because it happened."

Muhney joined the cast of The Young and the Restless in June 2009. In late 2013, the actor stunned fans by announcing that he'd been let go. Shortly after he taped his final scenes, reports surfaced that the actor was let go due to alleged backstage improprieties. The actor has not commented on those reports. He did, however, state in an interview immediately after his firing that he had expected his time on The Young and the Restless was nearing an end.

"I saw it coming, and I didn't see it coming," Muhney explained. "I suspected it could happen, but I didn't think that it really would -- at least not now; maybe down the line."

There's no word yet on the name of the actor hired to tackle the role of Adam. Y&R first released a casting call for the role of Adam earlier this year under the disguised name of "Aaron Newton." The show reportedly had a difficult time finding an actor to tackle the role, and re-released the casting call several months later.

While Muhney had never been officially mentioned as a possible candidate during the casting process, the actor's passionate fanbase has been calling on the CBS soap to rehire him. A show source tells Soaps In Depth that Muhney and CBS were never engaged in any sort of negotiations. Soap Opera Digest, however, reported earlier this year that the two sides were, in fact, in talks.

In June, former All My Children star Cameron Mathison (ex-Ryan Lavery) denied Internet chatter that he had been hired as Y&R's new Adam.
